The project will tap into the power of football to deliver health and educational programmes to 2000 participants in Botswana. Our Theory of Change is based on the premise that when sport is delivered in an appropriate manner it can create an environment that develops youth who are more likely to make healthy decisions and avoid risk behavior. Football's popularity will be used as a "catch" to entice hard-to-reach youth, to participate and stay actively involved in the educational processes.
Alcohol, drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, crime and unemployment among youth are high in South East. Youth use drugs and alcohol and engage in crime. The large numbers of idle youth who have no work or recreation-triggers anti-social behavior, the increase of young girls dropping out of schools due to teenage pregnancy is viewed as a result of this. Unemployment also creates an environment where sexual exploitation of teenage girls flourishes as well as growing new infections of HIV/AIDS.
We provide educational and health programmes that develop leadership, life, transferable employment skills in youth using the Kicking AIDS out concept, an international concept using games to address health and social issues. For example, a tag game can demonstrate how HIV is transmitted. Activities includes coaching clinics integrating health messages, a girl's programme to promote wellness for young women, school based peer education programme to develop positive social, life coping skills.
The project will impart social skills among participants to adopt positive healthy living and reduce drugs and alcohol intake. The participants over the years will learn how to negotiate for safer sex, reducing the number of increasing HIV infections and teenage pregnancy. The project will provide recreational activities that will respond to idleness and crime levels. The educational component will prepare them for future employment by giving them interpersonal, life and leadership skills.
