Thailand's elderly population is growing rapidly and is expected to reach 14.6 million by 2024. Over 40% of elderly people in rural areas face food insecurity due to health issues, reduced family support, and natural disasters. This project empowers rural elderly by helping them grow and sell vegetables, providing income and food security while promoting dignity, social inclusion, and self-reliance.
Thailand's elderly population is rapidly increasing, especially in rural areas. Around 40% of elderly people experience poverty and food insecurity, which is compounded by health issues and physical limitations. The migration of younger generations has left many without family support, while inadequate social welfare systems offer little relief. Environmental factors like droughts and floods further disrupt agriculture, restricting elderly people from farming.
This project promotes small-scale vegetable gardening, using raised beds and solar powered water system as low-maintenance methods that accommodate physical limitations of elderly people. The project boosts financial independence of elderly people by allowing them to grow and sell produce. Linking them to both local and online markets facilitate the sale of surplus, generating an additional source of income.
Elderly people gain food security and reduce reliance on external support through vegetable production, fostering financial independence and social value. It provides a model for sustainable vegetable production in local communities, strengthening community resilience. Aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it supports SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequality).
