Dear Friends,
We started off with the ambitious goal of improving the nutrition status of 3,000 women and children in Kigali, Rwanda. Thanks to your support, we did!
Here are all the objectives we reached since the beginning of the project:
- We trained Young Master Gardeners in improved techniques for urban and peri-urban agriculture, including water use efficiency and composting;
- With the technical supervision of our Young Master Gardeners, we implemented a micro-garden in 16 different cooperatives throughout the city;
- We created demonstration gardens in 4 schools in 3 districts of Kigali;
- 2 of the schools were equipped with ECOSAN lattrines to improve sanitation and provide natural fertilizers to the gardens;
- A Spirulina micro-algea farm and demonstration center was established at the Gatenga Health Center in the Kicukiro District and several introductary trainings and demonstrations were organized for local authorities and a wide range of partners;
- Small-scale Spirulina community-level production units were established in 3 schools and training in Spirulina cultivation was provided to both teachers and students;
- With the produce from the micro-gardens and the Spirulina, we organized culinary demonstrations for the mothers of malnourished children, with hands-on activities of how to cook a well-balanced meal.
Overall, we reached more than 3,000 children and their families through the provision of fresh fruits and vegetables from the established micro-gardens.
We couldn't have done it without your support and encouragements.
We are now ready to move on to the next phase: we have helped raise awareness about the benefits of Spirulina and a healthy diet to tackle the problem of malnutrition in Rwanda. We now hope to promote the use of Spirulina in governmental and non-governmental nutrition programs, offering partners our technical assistance and expertise in the field.
We are excited and hopeful about the future. A future with less children suffer from hunger and malnutrition.
Best,
The YaLa Africa Team
