Grandma Kam trying out our new cook-chill congee!
Grandma Kam trying out our new cook-chill congee!

The Cook-chill soups have been very popular since Food Angel launched the ‘Cook-chill Food Care Programme’, as they are MSG-free yet rich-flavored with essence from various ingredients. To provide a larger variety of food products, cook-chill congee was launched in October this year. After the congee is chilled, the nutrients, flavors and quality are well preserved. They can be stored up to 4 days in the fridge, and our service-users can reheat the congee according to their desirable mealtime, which is more convenient and flexible for their consumption. The cook-chill congee is digestible and nutritious, and is especially consumable by elderly who wear dentures or have digestive problems.

Before the launch of the congee, we invited some elderly at our community centre to taste the new product to obtain feedback on the taste and texture to better understand our elderly’s dietary needs and preference. Among them is 92 year-old Grandma Kam who lives alone. She has 90 years of experience on consuming congee. Her gums have receded due to old age, and it normally takes a few minutes for her to chew a tiny piece of meat, thus she prefers to eat congee. The product on trial this time is congee with corn, carrots and minced fish. Our expert consumed it quickly and was satisfied with the product. She gave us a huge grin and commented the congee to be ‘Fresh, silky and tasty!’

The cook-chill congee will be offered in different flavors, such as mushroom with pork, pumpkin and sweet potato. New flavors will also be created with other suitable food types that we are able to rescue.

Support Food Angel's food rescue and food assistance programme, and spread warmth and love this winter to elderly like Grandma Kam with us!

Celebrating Yee Gu's 100th birthday at her flat
Celebrating Yee Gu's 100th birthday at her flat

Mrs. Li, one of our staff at Food Angel Community Centre, is known as "the walking database". She remembers every detail of our beneficiaries, and she can easily name, for example, who does not eat beef, and who did not come to the Centre the day before. She cares deeply about each and every one of our beneficiaries, and Yee Gu is one of them.

Yee Gu used to have her meals at Food Angel Community Centre, but as her legs' conditions became worse, making the journey to the Community Centre was too difficult for her. Therefore, she has switched to our Outreach Service, in which Outreach Angels deliver hot meal boxes and food packs to her door. Since then, there is not a time when Yee Gu does not mention Mrs. Li to the Angels, to express her gratitude for Mrs. Li's care.

It was Yee Gu's 100th birthday this May, and Mrs. Li went along with other staff to Yee Gu's home to celebrate with her. They brought along a birthday cake, and sang her a birthday song. It was a simple but heart-warming celebration. More importantly, seeing Mrs. Li again brought the biggest smile to Yee Gu's face. The joy in her eyes reminds us our mission of serving “With Love”.

Donate and support Food Angel's meal service so more elderly like Yee Gu can receive more than just a meal from Food Angel.

Food Angel's new cook-chill meal
Food Angel's new cook-chill meal

We are really excited to introduce Food Angel's new and free cook-chill meal & soup service, in addition to our usual free hot meals!

The cook-chill meal serviced is launched in April 2019 along with the opening of Harvest Mill, our new Food Processing Centre located in Kwuntong. At the new centre, cook-chill technology is adopted to provide food including soup and congee type of products. The meals and soups are chilled from 90 degrees to 4 degrees in 90 minutes after preparation, and the beneficiaries can collect them and store them at home for up to 4 days, and reheat with microwave, wok or rice cooker when they wish. This new service increases the flexibility of meal times for beneficiaries, and accommodates their dietary needs during weekends and public holidays. With this new product, we will be able to expand our service to more needy in the community.

To learn more about the cook-chill meals and the operation of Harvest Mill, please visit the Food Angel webpage: http://www.foodangel.org.hk/team.php#harvest_mill.

Delivered outreach meal with fruits and veggies
Delivered outreach meal with fruits and veggies

“Ding Dong! Grandpa and Granny, I’m here with the hot meal box!”

Every Monday to Friday morning, Food Angel’s Outreach Angels pay a visit to isolated elderly who live alone or are with limited mobility to deliver free hot meals. Apart from the hot meal boxes, our Outreach Angels also bring along fruits, vegetables, soup and bread to share with them.

Food Angel arranges meals according to the needs of the elderly. As some of them suffer from gout, they have to be very careful regarding what they eat. Hence, Food Angel provides a special ‘Gout Meal’ with less seafood and mushrooms, making sure that the elderly get what is suitable for them.

In fact, most of the elderly value the care and love from volunteers more than the food itself. Therefore, Outreach Angels spend time to chat with them daily to better understand their needs. We wish to not just deliver food but to share warmth, love and care!

Your kind donation will support our Food Rescue and Assistance Programme, and help us produce free hot meals for the needy in HK.

Volunteers serving elderly at the community centre
Volunteers serving elderly at the community centre

What's that lovely smell coming from the Food Angel Community Centre? It is the wonderful smell of a home-cooked meal!

A cozy crowd of over a hundred elderly and volunteers gather at the Food Angel Community Centre for early lunch and dinner every day. The elderly are regular members and they sign up for meals each week. The Centre is blessed to have some dedicated volunteers who visit regularly as well. They have all formed special bonds as they greet and meet each other daily, and they all enjoy jolly chit chats before and after the meal services.

Freshly-cooked food is brought to the Community Centre from the Food Angel Kowloon Kitchen directly for the elderly to enjoy a hassle-free dine-in meal. Volunteers portion food carefully according to individual’s preference and dietary requirements, such as less rice, less meat, or low-protein without fish or mushrooms. The dishes are then delivered swiftly to the dining table to ensure each and every one of them are well taken care of.  A huge thank you to our dedicated volunteers, for filling not only the elderly’s tummies with food, but also their hearts with love!

In addition to making a donation to Food Angel to support our hot meal production, you may consider volunteering with us at our Community Centre, kitchens and Food Station. For more details, please visit our webpage: http://bit.ly/FoodAngelVolunteer.
