"Pending Food" empowers women leaders of community kitchens to combat food insecurity in vulnerable communities in Peru. Since 2022, the program, implemented by Juguete Pendiente, focuses on training, equipment provision, and support to enhance the management and sustainability of these grassroots organizations. Through two key phases, over 1,200 women leaders have been trained, benefiting more than 42,000 people, promoting autonomy and resilience in times of crisis.
Food insecurity affects 51% of Peruvian households, especially in vulnerable communities. Community kitchens, essential for providing food access, face challenges in management, sustainability, and resources. Many lack adequate infrastructure, access to potable water, and knowledge of nutrition and finances, threatening their continuity in a context of rising inflation and increasing poverty.
The program develops leadership, financial management, sanitation, and nutrition skills among women leaders of community kitchens. It provides food, equipment, and training to improve their operations. The second phase includes sustainable entrepreneurship initiatives, generating additional income. This holistic approach ensures the sustainability of community kitchens, increasing their impact and reducing reliance on external donations.
"Pending Food" fosters the economic sustainability of community kitchens, strengthening community networks and empowering women leaders as agents of change. In the long term, it will reduce food insecurity, improve the quality of life for thousands of families, and create replicable social development models that promote autonomy and community well-being.
