Summary

Let's get creative to improve our food! We deliver fruits, veggies & grains to 100 families in Concepcion Pinula village in Guatemala. This is how we elevate education through our food baskets and meals, to visually and tangibly embrace diverse healthy foods, comprehend their value for consumption and production, and to bring knowledge towards resilient livelihoods. All of this is possible thanks to our core team in the community, where they are mastering skills towards food and income security.

Challenge

Nutrition and health are often misunderstood, and are not integrated into our daily lives because of the barriers created by technical language, uneven access to food and information. Guatemala has the highest stunting rate in Latin America, growing hunger, overweight, obesity, and non-communicable diseases. Yet all of these forms of malnutrition are being tackled separately. An agricultural country, the value of produce is disregarded to aspirational industrialized foods.

Solution

All forms of malnutrition should be intertwined and integrated as a whole. Our purpose with Eat Better Wa'ik is for girls, boys, women, men and all the population to engage in their food choices more critically and naturally. Therefore, we bring food awareness and actions to reduce malnutrition with creative and inclusive education, economics, agricultural transformation, consumption and technology, merging food, climate and human rights/value.

Long-Term Impact

Thanks to community participation and trust, together we've improved our food response towards their specific needs and preferences. We understood their limitations in access and availability of healthy options, economic precarity to own land for more diverse and nutritious crops, and to travel to assorted markets. Therefore, we will continue to bring job opportunities in the community to work with us, build a healthy store and agroforestry farm managed by them as source of sustained income.
