Challenge

The majority of the 3000 residents (1200 children) at Eleonas Refugee Camp no longer receive the EU cash support and many are struggling to meet even basic food and hygiene needs. Among them are families with several children and some very vulnerable people in constant need of medical, social-psychological care. Other than support with basic needs residents should have access to education, the most important tool for them to achieve, self-reliance, social integration and build a better future

Solution

This project will ensure that nobody at Eleonas is hungry by supplementing food needs through a monthly basket distribution. It will not solve the long-term problem of sustainably feeding the entire population but it will reduce the suffering, stress and negative health impact for a certain time. Education programs include languages, math, science, kindergarten, skill-development, etc. Their positive impact on self-reliance, employability, social integration has been evident in the last 5 years

Long-Term Impact

The food basket initiative is necessary to prevent hunger and alleviate suffering in the short/medium-term. On the other hand the education programs which are customized for the needs of refugees, have a significant and lasting impact. Children who have missed years of schooling and went through so much, must have the same opportunities as their peers in Europe while adults need language and skill-development to access the labor market and achieve self-reliance integrated in society.
