The Fongoli Savanna Chimpanzee Project has continued, uninterrupted, since the year 2001. Along with longterm behavioral research on these chimpanzees, which live at the edge of the species' range in Senegal, we focus on conservation and research that takes into account how humans and chimpanzees have and can continue to co-exist here. The goal of this project is to raise funds to establish an endowment so that future generations, especially Senegalese, can continue this work.
While the Fongoli chimpanzees have continued to exist in Senegal, at the edge of their species' range, rapid changes associated with a recent and ongoing gold rush has brought about problematic change for these apes. It is imperative that we continue monitoring their health and wellbeing in addition to helping resolve conflict between chimpanzees and humans in this area of Senegal.
It is crucial to establish an endowment so that future generations can continue to study and protect these Critically Endangered chimpanzees.
It is especially important to arrange this so that researchers in Senegal are at the helm of this endeavor, and establishing an endowment would provide basic operating costs for future research and conservation efforts.
