Nicaragua, a country highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, has faced significant challenges between November 2023 and May 2024. Annual tropical storms and hurricanes have meant severe droughts, leading to crop losses, food shortages, malnutrition, and new waves of migration. In response to this crisis, CEPAD has implemented various actions to support the affected population and improve their resilience.
During the drought, CEPAD distributed 200 food packages to 1,280 affected people, alleviating hunger and malnutrition while working on long-term solutions. This immediate support was crucial for the hardest-hit communities.
To address long-term climate challenges, CEPAD has promoted agroecological techniques and food security alternatives among farmers. These have included collecting materials to improve soil quality, which is essential for establishing community nurseries and sustainable cultivation areas. Additionally, micro-dams have been planned to optimise water use in growing crops and mitigate the effects of drought. Encouraging a greater variety of crops also strengthens food security by providing a more diverse and resilient diet.
“We have a better diet, producing and consuming fruits, roots, and vegetables,”says a producer benefiting from the agricultural program.
Furthermore, CEPAD is supporting communities with economic alternatives, especially for women, to reduce the need for migration. New businesses such as convenience stores, clothing sales, food sales and bakeries have been encouraged, generating income and strengthening the local economy.
“I am solving the feeding of my children with the little profits that I am obtaining through my small business,”says a woman benefiting from the entrepreneurship program.
CEPAD appreciates the support received, which has allowed for greater climate resilience in the communities of Teustepe. These efforts will continue, always seeking to improve the quality of life for the population and better prepare them to face the challenges of climate change.
