In the wake of devastating flooding in October, PSYDEH is supporting disaster relief in rural and indigenous communities across the Sierra Otomi-Tepehua-Nahua region of Hidalgo, Mexico. In collaboration with local leaders and grassroots partners, our focus is to help deliver emergency supplies, restore regional communication, and accompany communities to lead recovery through sustainable, culturally grounded strategies that foster long-term resilience and preparedness against future disasters.
Heavy rainfall associated with Hurricane Priscilla has caused catastrophic flooding and landslides across the Otomi-Tepehua-Nahua region of Hidalgo, Mexico, resulting in severe damage across various rural and indigenous communities. Homes, roads, and livelihoods have been destroyed, and sadly lives have been lost. Access to water, electricity, and healthcare services has also been disrupted. There are reports of shortages of food, water, medicines, and other essential goods and supplies.
In response to the devastation, we're supporting recovery efforts across the region to ensure that these communities receive the resources they need to recover, including the provision of food and other essential items. We have activated our dedicated solar-powered digital centers to be communication hubs for families amid telecom disruptions and blackouts. As we move into the recovery phase, we have strengthened local capacity to respond to the current needs and to prepare for future disasters.
As well as addressing the current needs, this project will strengthen the long-term resilience of rural and Indigenous communities in the Sierra Otomi-Tepehua-Nahua by empowering local leaders (particularly women), reinforcing community networks, and improving preparedness for future emergencies. By centering Indigenous voices and self-determination, this project supports sustainable, community-led recovery and lays the groundwork for long-term development rooted in local priorities.
