PROJECT TITLE: FLOOD DISASTER RESPONSE AT TAMILNADU, S.INDIA

For the Flood Affected victims of at Ezhil Nagar of Chennai city an Awareness Training Programme regarding the defects found during the occurrence of Natural Disaster. In this programme Disaster Management Trainers offered the demonstration training thro Climate Managers and explained the same in detail.

Disasters are of two kinds named 1. Natural Disaster 2. Artificial Disaster. The second one is the accident being caused by men such as fire or road accidents, accidents by building demolitions, bus, train, flight accidents etc. These happen by men or troubles in the mechanism. By these accidents many vulnerable community get injured every day. That is why we need to help them to recover from their ailments. We taught about this to the vulnerable community in this area along with the practical demonstration.

COMMUNITY BASED DISASTER RISK MANAGEMENT (CBDRM):

Cyclone, Rain Flood, Tsunami, Tremors, earth quake, Jungle Fire, lighting etc are the natural disasters. If they occur, it would cause great damages and loss to the people. In addition to that it would cause great changes in climate condition earth, fire, water etc. Due to these changes, it would cause many damage to men. With the practical demonstration, how the disaster is formed? What are the Defects formed? What are the consequences met by men, methods to prevent these disasters, early warning actions to be taken, protection and management action to be taken in the disaster affected areas, helps from the Govt., identification of the safe evacuation routes in the multi storied buildings and accommodation arrangements, First Aid helps to be done for the disaster affected victims were explained in detail. These were understood clearly by the affected community. Also a Disaster Management Group (Called as Climate Managers) was formed in order to provide the continuous training to the victim in this area. This group will find out the locations of High Risk Groups (HRG) Alternative abled, Aged Children in this area and also this group will have the contact with the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) always.

DRINKING WATER CONSERVATION:

Underground water purity was tested thro Field Water Tool Kit (FWTK) designed by Govt. of Tamilnadu, TWAD Board in this area as the rain flood occurred in Chennai area. PH value of drinking water being issued by the Govt. was tested here. Actually it must be from 6.5 to 9. This experiment was convened with the Field Water Test Kit being made by Tamilnadu Water and Drinking Board. In what manner Minerals in the drinking water are utilized for us? Particularly food digestion, teeth and bones decay, Mouth ulcer, throat infection, intestinal ulcer and relativity with the usage of water were explained in detail. Also it was checked if the waste water pumped out by the factories and waste water from the houses are mixed. It was also taught for the participants of Training Programme. Water Teat was performed before the participants of the Training Programme. Through this kit it was checked if the “Water Analysis” in that area contained the minerals such as chlorine, Ammonia, Iron, Phosphate. In some water bottles these minerals were less in quantity. In some samples no minerals are found. Such water samples are not suitable for drinking. Through the Field Water Teat Kit it was found out and proven so.

It was also informed to the trainees that 90% diseases are caused by water impurities. Particularly communicable diseases such as Typhoid, diarrhea, Jaundice, Chicken Guinea, Dengue fevers are Transmitted through water. That is why everybody must drink the boiled and cooled water. We must be careful that our houses must not be surrounded with stagnant water we must take always chlorinated water. It was explained clearly to them in the CBDRM Training.
