REPORT TITLE: TRAINING FOR REDUCING VULNERABILITY TO CUDDALORE SLUM DWELLERS
PROJECT TITLE: FLOOD DISASTER RESPONSE AT TAMIL NADU, S. INDIA
PROJECT GROUP: WOMEN SELF HELP GROUPS MEMBERS (SLUM DWELLERS)
TARGET SITE: FLOOD AFFECTED PERIYAKUMATTI VILLAGE, CUDDALORE DISTRICT
In Cuddalore District of Parankipettai Panchayat Union at Periyakumatti Panchayat Disaster Management Awareness Training Programme was held. At this training programme in the presence of Animator, Women Self Help Group Chairman, Periyakumatti Panchayat level Federation Presided over this Training Programme Project Manager & Co-ordinator Chevalier Roche Society & Global Giving offered the Training for the participants of this Training Programme.
DURING THE TRAINING FOLLOWING INFORMATION WERE OFFERED:
What are the early warning activities to be taken before the occurrence of the disaster? It was described in detail. Low lying areas shall be found out. Vulnerable community must be in the prepared condition. The trainees were asked to do so. Trainees were asked to evaluate the vulnerable community of the affected areas and locations of the affected areas. Participants were informed to know the protected places and the evacuation routes to the protected places. Also they were asked to collect the emergency phone Nos. Water routes such as Canals and Streams to be made right and the encroachments from those water routes shall be removed. Trainees were asked to do this. Trainees were asked to plant the saplings on the edges of beach, river banks and to have gunny bags filled with sand in ready condition. They were also asked to form Disaster Management groups and to provide Continuous trainings to the groups. Participants of this programme were asked to form Disaster Management Project and it was explained in detail what points should be formed in the Village Disaster Management Project. It was explained in detail about the defects being made by the disasters and how we could reduce those defects and methods to reduce those defects.
What are the ways of work to be done during the disaster? Early Warnings and information exchange, Seeking and Recovery works, First Aid and Treatment, Drinking water & Health Hygiene, Accommodation & Management, Counseling and Comfort.
How these could be delivered. It was explained in detail. After sometime of the Disaster what shall be done? Plans to be made for the vulnerable community to turn to their normal condition and Rehabilitation plans to be made. It was also asked to count the affected vulnerable community and their needs must be evaluated. Trainees were asked to do so in the disaster affect places. Trainees were asked to make arrangements for the victims to get Trainings and resources.
What shall be done during the time of Disaster for the Rehabilitation of the victims? Trainees were asked to carry the victims to the protected places and further arrangements to be made. Trainees were also asked to arrange Lavatories, Water and Health facilities for the victims of the disaster. Trainees were also asked to recover the Victims from the affected places and to arrange vaccination for the disaster affected. Also they were asked to arrange and convene Medical Camps, especially for women. Medical helps to be provided for the disaster affected Differently abled vulnerable community and being considered their difficulties to according to their condition and situation. It was explained in detail for arranging to give Early Warnings being considered their defects of the victims (Either Natural or Artificial Disaster) and to arrange the Victims with the preparedness, disease blocking methods and Creating Awareness among the disaster affected victims.
FIRST AID TRAINING:
It was explained with the practical demonstration for the First Aid activities to be made to the Trainees participated in the programs. If the disaster affected person is affected the fire injuries, it was explained what type of First AIDS to be provided to the aged victims. If any disaster affected person feels suffocated and is an adult what type of Artificial Respiration to be arranged. If there are Children, What type of Artificial Respiration to be provided? These were demonstrated with necessary explanations. External pressure to the heart for Adults and children through Practical Demonstration. How we shall control the Hemorrhage of a Disaster affected person and what type of bandage to be made. It was also explained about the First AID to be made for the victims. How shall we make bandage for the bone fractured victims in what manner they shall be carried to the hospital or any protected place? Affected victims shall be taken to the Emergency Help Centre or Hospitals. It was explained in detail and it was explained in what manner they should be carried. A practical demonstration was also convened before the Trainees. Finally Representative, Women Self Help Group delivered the vote of thanks and this programme was accomplished in a nice manner.
