REPORT TITLE: FLOOD DISASTER RESPONSE AT CHENNAI SLUM STUDENTS
PROJECT TITLE: FLOOD DISASTER RESPONSE AT TAMILNADU, S.INDIA
PROJECT SITE: KANNAGI NAGAR, CHENNAI
TARGET COMMUNITY: SLUM STUDENTS YOUNG MEN & WOMEN
At Kannagi Nagar, Chennai for the Students, Young men and Women Disaster Management Training Programme and detailed explanation with practical demonstration was convened.
SELF MOTIVATION TRAINING:
In Kannagi Nagar area after the rain flood, they are living in this area have occupied the slum clearance Board housing units. Every year during the rainy season these vulnerable community are heavily affected. It was needed to train them how they should protect themselves and how to prepare themselves against the disaster every day. The reason for this is the lack of knowledge for the people in this area. Therefore every year people in this area are affected severely. Therefore the people in this area must have the self confidence for protecting themselves and they must create the confidence for themselves and developing the same further confidence to develop their positive attitude and their mind must be ready to face the disaster at any time? In this manner they were provided Psychological Training and Disaster Management Training. Likewise in the earlier times we need not worry about the Disaster Management. Both the Govt. and non – Government organizations provide the Disaster Management Awareness training Programmes, being sought the slum community themselves who are in the need of acquiring Training for them. As a part of this programme we visited the people in this area and prepared them psychologically towards this Training Programme. During the earlier times we had no any distant communication equipments. That is why we were not able to know about the disaster and even we did not acquire the knowledge when the disaster will affected the particular area. As we had no any awareness and preparedness towards the disaster. So we had met many disasters, damages and losses heavily. Now days we have the Televisions, Radios, Mobile phone etc. Through these Medias with the help of satellites we are able to know the timing of the disasters and their defects. That is why we can make some earlier fore warnings and earlier arrangements to protect us from the heavy rain, Flood, Tremors, Tsunami like cyclone etc.
EARLY WARNING:
At first we must find the locations of the houses in this area and they must be shown in the Ven Diagram (Sociological research Tool) clearly. It we divide the houses into varieties such as huts, tailed houses, concrete building, Apartments etc. Also we must know clearly about people living in this area. We must know also in which houses vulnerable elder community are living. And also it is necessary for us to know about the discussed people, alternative skilled people and children. During the time of the disaster it would be helpful to lead them properly according to their need and necessity. These particulars must be noted clearly and a chart must be prepared to find the necessity clearly at anytime and it would be helpful to carry them to the places of protection. Before the occurrence of the disaster we must have found the places of protection for their stay. Especially these places must be in the top positions. Then only it would not be affected with the flood, cyclone etc. It must be informed to the people in ahead of time. Also we must gather the young men in the disaster affected area and provide them Disaster Management Training to them. Then only they can be ready to help the victims properly. Also we must keep a board or thick sheet containing Emergency Phone Numbers visibly in a centre location of the people.
FIRST AID TRAINING THROUGH VARIOUS BANDAGE TECHNIQUES:
After the occurrence of the disaster many vulnerable community including patients would be found injured or found fainted or unconscious. We can help them with the necessary articles we have in our houses. This was taught to the trainees with the practical demonstration. If somebody gets injured on head, we can take a dhoty or saree or an half saree or a nap kin and tear the same into a small piece and fold the same to four layers, keep the same upon the injury, press it, with a help of a long narrow cloth make a bandage surrounding his or her head, so that we can avoid the much bleeding to the person injured. As soon as we find such an injured person, we must make a phone call to Ambulance by dialing No. 108, and inform the incident with the address. If a person gets injured by breaking of a tree branch or demolition of a house and is found bone fractured on and or leg on both the sides of the fracture we shall keep to scales or 2 long sticks and tightly make a bandage surrounding the fracture, so that we can help him to feel better about the injury. If somebody is found in the unconscious condition, at first must check him or her whether he or she is alive. We can check by keeping our fingers upon the wrist or temples of the fore head, neck or lower portion of the jaw or left side of the chest and so on. If a person’s heart beat is found stopped we can make pressure upon the chest of the fainted person or gentle attack without fist upon this or her chest, he or she will come to the conscious condition. Also we can breathe our air into his / her mouth. Then he / she will begin to breathe and the heart beat will begin.
RECOVERY FROM FIRE ACCIDENT:
If any fire accident is found during the time of disaster we must pour out the pure water upon the fire injury because our body has many layers. Force of the fire shall not damage the bone by passing the layers of our body muscle. That is why we need to cool the fire injured portion of the body with the help of. If a person is caught off by fire we must spread the cotton bed sheet or thick cloth upon him so as to avoid the spreading of fire further. Being surrounding his body with the bed sheet we must roll on his body upon the floor gently. Then his body must be covered with cold water. Even though the fire quenched, the heat of the fire would have affected the inner organs such as heart, liver, kidney, spleen etc. Then that person must be laid upon plantain leaf and we need to make a phone call for Ambulance. In that manner Disaster Management Training accomplished.
