REPORT TITLE: FIRST AID AND MOCK DRILL TRAININGS AT THOOTHUKUDI PROJECT TITLE: FLOOD DISASTER RESPONSE AT TAMILNADU, S. INDIA PROJECT SITES: ILAMBHUVANAM AND THURAIYUR PANCHAYATS

Ilambhuvanam is a village, Kovilpatti Block Thoothukudi District which was affected by rain flood. Our project team went to this village to provide Training for Disaster Awareness and First Aid for Disaster affected. As soon as we reached this village, people heard about us that we had come there to provide them the training all of them came toward us and heard with much zeal. We provided them the awareness about the rain flood and fire accidents and also we told them how they could protect themselves and other especially during rain flood and fire accidents. Also we encouraged them to serve with enough courage. All of them eagerly heard our words regarding the Disaster Awareness Training Programme.

FIRST AID TRAINING PROGRAMME:

In this village, generally village community do not know how recover a person who meets an accident we offered them the Training how to give treatment for a person who got injured upon his head and also for the hand or leg or head injured. Especially giving the first aid treatment to them it was also described how to recover the victims who are injured and carry them to the hospital or to the nearby clinic without any further delay. How shall we handle the injured person after making arrangements for his rest in the bed condition? His heart beat was checked by keeping our palm upon his chest or keeping our fingers upon his wrist or keeping our fingers upon the temples of the fare head. If we are unable to know his heart beat or pulse rate, it was also taught what we shall do as the next step. We also provided them the training of they get injured upon or leg. We also taught them how we should make bandages surrounding the injured and take him to the hospital in what manner? Village people eagerly participated in the Training Programme and benefited much.

MOCK – DRILL TRAINING PROGRAMME: If the people do not have any transportation facilities, what shall they do to carry the disaster victims to the Govt. Hospital or anywhere else? If the injured person is unable to walk we can bend our hands like chair and the person who is sick can be seated upon our hands and we can carry. In this situation if only one person is available not 2 persons that one person can ask the victims to stand upon his feet and his hands upon the volunteers shoulder, the volunteer can walk gently. It would be much helpful for the disaster affected person and the victims also would not feel much pain. All these trainings were offered to the people in the village Ilambhuvanam. People there were happy to learn the training.

DISASTER MANAGEMENT TRAINING AT THURAIYUR PANCHAYAT, THOOTHUKUDI DISTRICT:

In Village areas most of the people are not much educated. The reason for this many people are doing the agricultural work in their native village only. Therefore those people don’t know about the disaster and also the awareness about the same. In this situation we went to this village named Thuraiyur. We offered them the Training about the Disaster Awareness, and how shall we protect ourselves during the disaster times? And how shall we help the affected or injured person during the disaster. These were explained in detail to them. In most of the incidents women do not participate. Therefore men only would Park in many incidents. That is why in many villages women are not developed so far. Usually we would visit the village in which most of the women do not participated in any progrmme – like Thuraiyur village Therefore we went to Thuraiyur village and offered the Training for women at Thuraiyur. In which village women must get courage not only protecting themselves, but also they must protect others also, providing the First Aid Treatment to them and also take necessary actions to carry them to the hospital. And also they must know how to stop the bleeding from an injury and how to control the bleeding from their injuries. How to take immediate action during the disaster times etc. Were taught to them clearly in this manner so many trainings were offered to them they also learnt well all these.

FIRST AID TRAINING: How to redeem a person when he is entangled among the demolitions. Such First Aid Training was provided to the Trainees participated in the programme. When a person is found injured and in unconscious condition, we must check whether he is alive or not. In order to find his living condition we must check his breathing by bringing our hand near his nostrils. If it is not found we must keep our earn near his heart portion and try to find his heart beat. Then we can easily find if he is alive or not. If his breathing is not found even, we can give breathing to him. In what manner we can do this? Being kept a clean cloth over his mouth and we can keep mouth upon his mouth and breathe air in to him. Following this process (Artificial Respiration) he will come to the normal condition. Then it was taught in what manner we can provide treatment, if he / she is found injured in hand or leg. Even somebody is found bone fractured how can we treat him in a better manner? It was also taught in what manner we can recover him from his big injury and painful situation.

MOCK DRILL TRAINING PROGRAMME: During this Training programme it was taught in what manner we can carry a person who got injured severely to the hospital without 108 Ambulance. If the disaster affected person is found injured at his hand, two persons can jointly form a chain like form and they can easily carry him in his sitting position if somebody else is found he is unable to walk due to the bone fracture on his leg we can ask his soles to be kip upon our feet and move him comfortably without any hurt for him. If somebody has the head injury we can make laid upon a bed sheet and carry him with the help of 4 person holding the 4 corners of the a bed sheet easily, so the head injured person can be carried in a comfortable manner In the past in many cases many have lost their family members and possessions. In order to avoid this in the future and to protect the human lives and their possessions from the terrible disasters and their bad defects. Therefore these people of the village brought a suggestion to brive the training like this in all village and people in Thuraiyur Panchayat union conveyed their heartfelt thanks to Global Giving as the Training programme was very beneficial to everybody there.
