Flood Disaster Response at Tamil Nadu, S.India

REPORT TITLE: FLOOD DISASTER MANAGEMENT IN CHENNAI

FLOOD DISASTER MANAGEMENT:

            Disaster Awareness for the Students volunteers from Loyola College at Saidapet Kothamedu, Chennai District. Disasters are of two kinds. They are Natural Disaster and Artificial Disaster. Artificial disasters are fire accident, Riot, Fierce actions, accidents etc. Natural disasters are cyclone, natural destruction, huge floods, sea erosions, tidal waves, soil decline, volcano, and tsunami etc., awareness about the natural disaster protecting ourselves from that were explained in detail for the people at Kothamedu, Saidapet area Chennai District. They are as follows: Tremors are occurred. In some areas stored buildings are built beyond the limit. That is why the quality of the land changes. As a result of that tremors are occurred in our nation. In our areas different kinds of disaster destructions are found according to the season then and there. Sea erosions, destructions like natural calamities, tremors formed in the sea like such disasters our nation is come crossing many defects. In order to protect ourselves, some protection methods were informed to the people gathered there.

FIRST AID TECHNIQUES: Some of us will have children when they play accidentally  they fall down during that occasion they get injured either with little injuries or major injuries they were taught to protect themselves in various methods, with the help of students (Kothamedu, Saidapet area) people in the slum areas understood them well.We taught the College Students Volunteers there about first aid. If a student gets injured and turns to unconscious condition at first we must make a bandage at the place of injury by pressing with a clean cloth. If the person injured is found unconscious we must check him at first whether he is alive or not. In order to find that we must check at his wrist by keep in of our fingers over there. Then we must check at his forehead with our fingers. Then at neck portion we can check the pulse by keeping both of our hands. Also we can check by keeping our ear on the chest and hear the heart beat. If the heart beat is not felt there we must press with our two hands upon the chest if we do so heart beat will felt again.  Also we must keep our mouth upon the disaster affected one and exhale air into his mouth. At the same time any of our infection should not affect him. To be so we must cover his mouth with a clean cloth and blow air into his mouth. If anybody has the hand bone fracture we must keep foot scales or wooden stick upon the broken sides of the bone and make bandage over that.In this manner first aid shall be done. In this manner it was explained with the practical demonstration hand should not be left in the hanged manner with a long ribbon like cloth we must tie the same across the broken hand and surrounding the neck like a cradle. If we do the first aid in this manner for the hand bone broken cases they would feel less pain.

MOCK TRILL (TRAINING) PROGRAMME: During the time of over flowing flood we shall know how we shall protect ourselves from the flood disaster. Demonstration was performed how to protect the aged persons from the flood disaster among the slum area. In the case of an aged man is unable to walk and enter into the ambulance we can help him to carry to the hospital by helping him to go into the 108 ambulance. Take a bed sheet and use it like a temporary stretcher and make him to lie upon the bed sheet so that we can easily carry him into the ambulance. If somebody gets injured two persons can join their hand and help the injured person to carry him somewhere. It was practically demonstrated before the people.Benefits of water usage of water without any wastage, quantity of water, protein content in the water were explained to the people with demonstration before the audience.  Water is an essential article for our living in this world. It was explained how we should use the water in a limited manner. College Students Volunteers area understood well about this. When we collect water through the pipe tap, we must be careful. Without wastage we must collect water in our pot or bucket we should not allow water to be overflow from our vessel. Being considered the season whether it is summer or rainy season, according to that we must utilize the water and the measurement of water usage must be very appropriate. During the occurrence of heavy flood in rainy season some dusts, wastages even faces may come along with the tap water. Hence we must heat and boil the water filter the same and then we must only use that water. This water will be a purified one. After filtering water now it is read for our usage. Also we must check the water with the help of an equipment name FWTK kit from Tamilnadu water and drainage board. That method of water testing was also performed before the audience as a demonstration. In demonstration we asked the people some questions and they answered very well.
