PROJECT UNDER: FLOOD DISASTER RESONSE AT TAMILNADU, S. INDIA

For the people in the Keelavalam Panchayat (Maduranthagam Union) and Pulleri Panchayat (Thirukalukundram Union) Flood affected area of Kanchipuram  District, near Chennai Tamilnadu, India the following Training Programmes were offered. 1. Disaster Management Awareness Progarmme 2. First Aid – Technique 3. Mock Drill 4. Water Conservation and Water Analysis.DISASTER MANAGEMENT AWARENESS PROGRAMME: About Disaster Management Awareness and Training Programme was offered for the people in the slum area of Keelavalam Panchayat (Maduranthagam Union) of Kanchipuram District village to them we told about the following points:Disasters are of two kinds. There are Artificial and Natural Disasters. We can’t block the Disasters during occurrence of disasters. At the same time we can protect ourselves from the disaster. When flood like disadvantages are occurred, what type of safety measures can be taken and by which we can protect ourselves. Also it was informed to them we should not be affected heavily with the huge flood etc. Even in the midst of this anything happens accidentally to destroy the livelihoods of the people, how we should recover the victims and restore them back to their normal condition.

FIRST AID TECHNIQUES:For the victims in the Pulleri Panchayat and Keelavalam Panchayat area First Aid Training Programmes were offered. The disaster affected people were provided the Awareness Action Training Programme of First Aid Treatment with the demonstration. From the Audience 3 boys were called and performed the First Aid Training Programme. As a part of that explanation was given in what manner we can make arrangements to bring 108 Ambulance without any delay. Practically we performed some First Aid services in front of the Audience. In our Area of visit we chose some students and with their help First Aid demonstration was convened before the people from the slum areas Boys are not careful when they play. Because of that they may get injured. It a boy gets injured, how can we recover hum from that illness by providing First Aid help to him. It was demonstrated in a simple manner before the audience. In the injured part of the body we must keep a clean and sterile clothe and give pressure in that particular location. Following that we must make bandage over that. Then we must check the pulse rate of the person by make a check up with the help of our fingers by which we can trace the victims pulse rate exactly. We can also check the pulse rate of the victims by keeping our fingers upon the temples of his fore head. Then we can confirm his consciousness and living condition by keeping our fingers gently surrounding his neck portion. In addition to this we must keep our ear upon his left side of the chest and confirm the presence of his heart beat exactly without any delay. If we are unable to trace his heart beat we must give pressure upon the left side of his chest with our palm and fingers. Following that we must cover his mouth with a nice and clean cloth, we shall breathe our ear unto his mouth. By the exhaling of our gently into his mouth, we can bring the victims quickly to his normal condition. This demonstration was performed before the participants. MOCK – DRILL: For the victims of Disaster in Keelavalam Panchayat area we provided the Mock Drill Awareness Training Programme with the practical Demonstration. During the occurrence of Heavy rain flood, we are unable to find the safety & alternative routes. During that occasion children and aged people would feel very hard to protect themselves and to find protected places for them. By providing practical Training and Demonstration Programme with the help of School Students to carry the aged people with the help of a stretcher like form by joining the hands of two persons. By this way we can carry any injured or affected person to the hospital. With the help of any bed sheet or saree or dhoty we can make it as a stretcher like form and carry the aged person or heavily inured person. If any small boy is found having bone fracture on his leg we can help him by keeping his soles upon. Our feet and easily reach the Ambulance or any protected place in safe manner.WATER CONSERVATION AND WATER ANALYSIS: For Keelavalam Panchayat Slum people Water Conservation Awareness was provided through Tamilnadu Drinking Water and Drainage Board by the operative Demonstration of FWTK Kit. One of the basic needs of our life is water and it is essential for our living. That is why we need to protect the quantity of water and Water Resources. Contagious diseases being spread by water and controlling methods of those diseases were explained to the community living over there. 1.Benefits of Water, 2. Usage of Water, 3. Resources of WaterBENEFITS OF WATER: Basic need for all lives to live in a proper manner is Water. For our blood circulation and for the circulation of our other body fluids water is very important source.USAGE OF WATER: We questioned the community for what purpose water utilized here? They answered water is utilized for cooking our food, drinking, washing cloths and dishes, bathing, Agricultural uses, factories, to quench fire and to bath our animals etc.USING WATER ANALYSIS KIT: Water sample was collected for testing its purity and to know the contents of the water practical demonstration was performed through Tool Kit. Operation method of that was explained to them clearly and through one of them that kit was operated for demonstration. By this way water color, quantity, taste, measurements of protein content in the water sample were found out. That is why he was able to know if they drink that water or not. Test for knowing the content of water and its measure was found out such as Iron, Phosphate, and Chlorine etc. Also we suggested them to spend the water economically for their usage and about the necessity of water conservation and the programme was accomplished successfully.
