RESPONDING TO FLOOD AFFECTED DISASTER IN CHENNAI

DISASTER MANAGEMENT TRAINING TO CLIMATE MANAGERS

PLACE: COMMUNITY WELFARE CENTRE, KANNAKI NAGAR, CHENNAI,

PRESIDENTSHIP:Dr. ASIR RAMESH, PROJECT LEAD – NCSCM ANNA UNIVERSITY – ISE-DIVISION CHENNAI

IN THE PRESENCE OF: R. UMA MAHESHWARI FEDERATION CHAIRMAN – KANNAKI NAGAR

 

In this Training programme Miss. N. Divya, Mr.C. Muthu Krishnan, Mr.N. Karthik, NCSCM-ISE Dept, Anna University, Chennai and Mr.A. Damotharan, Mr.W. Armstrong Global giving aided project managers participated and offered trainings on the topics on Disaster Management, Disaster Early Warning Actions, Methods of prevention and Recovery and First Aid. In this programme from each following areas (Global giving aided, flood disaster affected present project sites: Tondiyorpet, Egmore – Santhosh Nagar, Saidapet – Thider Nagar, Ezhil Nagar and Kannagi Nagar, six members from each target sites, hence totally we selected 30 ‘'climate managers’’ participated and benefited.

DISASTER MANAGEMENT TRAINING

   Houses must be constructed in the manner that they may not be damaged or demolished during the disaster times. Particularly houses shall not be constructed in low lying areas. These points were emphasized in a firm manner.

  1. Natural and Artificial Disaster and their defects were explained in detail
  2. 3 stages of disaster and their activities were explained in detail. 1. Before the Disaster 2. During the Disaster 3. After the Disaster
  3. It was emphasized to perform Early Warning Activities according the types of places being located in the village and they should be known earlier.
  4. It was asked to form the Disaster Management committee and to know the vulnerable sites through these climate managers at areas like Kannagi Nagar.
  5. It was emphasized to remove the encroachments of water line routes.
  6. Trainers emphasized not to carry the easily inflammable articles.
  7. It was emphasized how to handle carefully the crackers like articles.
  8. Trainers were emphasized with the precaution of having not met any fire accidents.
  9. It was informed about the actions and precautions to be taken during times of cyclone and Rain fall.
  10. Early warnings to be announced and precaution measures to be taken during the occurrence tremors were described in detail.
  11. During the times of rainy season and continuous rain early warning being given by the Govt. to be observed carefully and necessary actions must be taken.
  12. Trainers warned and emphasized trainers that they should not stand near any old buildings, Electric posts, Transformers and trees. Public people also must be warned so.
  13. It was asked to form the village level Disaster Management project.
  14. Trainers Advised the Trainers and to inform the public to collect the Emergency time phone numbers.
  15. Trainers also emphasized that such village level Disaster and Risk Management Groups must be provided training continually.

FIRST AID & RECOVERY TRAININGS

 Mr.A. Dhamotharan, Project Manager, Global giving aided Chevaliar Roche Society project along with the selected village level search and Recovery committee provided the Training with the Demonstration activities as follows:

  1. It was explained with demonstration to make a call immediately either to Ambulance or fire service centre if somebody meets any Road accidents or disaster
  2. Trainers also emphasized the importance of protecting the life of disaster affected person by providing the First Aid Treatment as soon as making the phone call for Ambulance or fire service centre.
  3.  Also the explanation was given along with the demonstration about providing the artificial respiration to the affected unconscious persons and checking their pulse rate.
  4. Demonstration with explanation was provided to the trainers about giving treatment to the persons who met the accident and having injury with much bleeding and controlling the bleeding by making bandage immediately to the injured person.
  5. It was also demonstrated and explanation was offered how to make the bandage for a fractured victim and providing the First Aid Treatment.
  6. Demonstration and Training were provided about carrying the greatly injured persons and little injured persons.
  7. Explanation was given on how to project the precious human lives by utilized the materials we have with us which can be used as recovery articles.

Finally Mr. Arputham, Co- ordinator, CRS offered the vote of thanks and accomplished the Training Programme.
