REPORT TITLE: DISASTER MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME AT THOOTHUKUDI SCHOOL

PROJECT TITLE: FLOOD DISASTER RESPONSE AT TAMILNADU, S.INDIA

Saveriarpuram is the flood affected site of Thoothukudi fishermen reside. Before 25 years, this place was filled with sand dunes. Later fishermen community began to move in this place. Therefore this place remains a low lying land and becomes easily affected during rain seasons and stormy periods. During the November month in 2015, this place had become easily affected in floods. The water took many days to drain. Since there are sand dunes, when the water stagnates, the place becomes marshy and the fishermen community find it difficult to move. As there is no appropriate road service, the fishermen community we made to stay in a resource centre, Xavier’s church. Transporting the vulnerable children, elders and the deserved people to the church was a tedious process. After the late arrival of the rescue service the elders and children are transported. With no electricity the affected victims become depressed. As there were more men in the rescue service, the women were little nervous. Therefore in order to prevent these types of situations the women, youngsters, school students are given disaster management training and divided into groups so that they could provide rescue service in the future.

STUDENT LEVEL DISASTER & RESCUE AWARENESS TRAINING:Knowledge about disaster is imparted to the students in this training. Coastal community mistake that tsunamis which causes huge waves is the only thing which comes under disaster. There are two types of disasters. They are natural disaster and man-made disasters fire accidents, bombs, antisocial activities and road accidents are man-made disaster, where as large waves, storms, floods due to rain and earthquakes are natural disaster. Natural disaster cannot be stopped by men but if he takes precautions and listens to the warnings he could escape from them. For example, if an earthquake occurs when we are in a school, we should not hide under the bencher and desks. Instead we should rush out to the open ground. When everyone runs together in the some director, there is a longer of stampede. Hence one must be careful when rushing out. One must not climb a top of trees. The trees may break and cause injuries to us. This kind of training was given to make the students know her to protect them selves.

FIRST AID TRAINING FOR SCHOOL STUDENTS: Students play together in schools, houses and streets. Sometimes this may level to accidents. When they are not treated immediately a great damage is caused. The ignorance of the children is a main reason for this. These circumstances happen in small as well as big accidents. First Aid training is provided to navigate these circumstances. During disasters, the victims usually faint. If this situation prolongs there is a grant danger. The heartbeat is identified by placing the hands on the wrists, on the face head, placing the can on the left side of the chest and heaving it. If there is beat the hands are folded and pressed in the left side of the chest. If there is still no heartbeat, mouth to mouth breathing is given by placing a cloth between the two mouths so that gums do not transfer. To stop the blood flow in case of injuries, a clean cloth is tied around the injury and another cloth is taken and tied tightly. Then the victim is taken to the hospital, the damage is reduced greatly.

DISASTER MOCK DRILL TRAINING: Students are given this training to protect themselves as well as their close ones during times of disaster. As a single person you could transport a victim from one place to another b carrying them off by supporting the head in the hand and the legs in the other hand. Victims who are unable to wall are made to stand on our legs, their hands are put on our shoulders. Our hands are placed in the waist of the victims and are saved. One stands in front and the legs are placed in the waist and another person carries through the aim pit of the victim. This balances the carrying and makes the weight less. Through this training the students learn to rescue victims safely. A mock drill is also conducted. Through this, the rescue during disaster is practiced.
