PROJECT UNDER : FLOOD DISASTER RESPONSE,TAMILNADU

TARGETTED SITE: CHENNAI DURAIPPAKKAM - EZHIL NAGAR

Ezhilnagar is located in south zone area of Chennai city.   It is situated in a low lying area

Here people have begun to live before 4 years  It is situated in the inner area of Thiruvanmiyur Main Road  This is a colony area having 2600 houses  Most of the people here belong to schedule caste community They are illiterate coolie workers Most of the women here work as house servant maids Area of each house is also very small and size of the same is 12x12 ft.

People lived in Different areas of Chennai city such as mint, Tharamani etc. particularly

they lived very near the drainage ditches have inhabited in this area During Nov.2015 huge rainy flood water came through Drainage canal Thiruvanmiyur entered into this town

As this is a low lying area flood water surrounded up to the quarters in the first floor

beyond the ground floor. People who had the small quantity of their possessions with them lost all of their possessions. Up to a period of one month time flood water surrounded this vulnerable area Community lived in this area were accommodated in large buildings during the flood such as marriage halls and Govt. school etc at Thiruvanmiyur area. Even though the flood water drained off right now in the areas of this town is surrounded by drainage water.

TRAINING ON SKILL DEVELOPMENT & DISASTER MANAGEMENT

This Training was offered for the vulnerable community especially for women and children to develop their skill and bring forth the same.

During the Training Programme to leave the shyness and inferiority complex it was emphasized. Everyone must talk with each other. To the gents and aged people and among 5 or more persons must reveal their ideas boldly, contrivances for that were taught to them

Their Skill of everybody was found out through the group evaluation and group discussion and were revealed during this Training Programme During the Training it was taught that they should not control their skills and just should not stay at their home itself, they can bring out their skills through their own entrepreneurships and develop their economic status. It was clearly informed during the Training Programme

In some occasions gents would be at their home themselves especially during the disaster times. Most of times men will not be at home In this situation, all women can not only protect themselves but also their depending persons. It was good enough for the trainees.During the times of fire accidents self protection method is necessary, protection method during the electrical accidents, protection method during the fire & cracker accidents, with standing during the times of storm and huge floods, having the complete knowledge of these and work according to that. Such trainings were offered during the training programme.As a causative action avoidance of keeping fuels at home closing the valves of the gas cylinder after once usage of stove. During the firing of crackers keeping up the enough quantity of sand and water is necessary. These points were emphasized in detail and the confident heart is necessary. It was also stressed to have cooperation with nearby people

PARTICIPATORY RURAL APPRAISAL PROGRAMME (PRA)Social Mapping:

Being conducted this programme, We were able to know all the resources available in this town. In order to know the differences between one street to another street and various routes were known. In that manner this programme was arranged. On the basis of this arrangement in all the streets of the town women and men were divided as groups according to their individual streets.

Before any disaster occurrence, the vulnerable community must have complete knowledge their own location, early measures (Evacuation routes. Being used by thro sociological research tools, this evaluation was conducted. Community draws such diagrams my using various colour powder. When they draw their own location they could easily recognized their locations and its vulneablity.They were provided with varieties of colour powders. Being used these varieties of colour powders their streets were drawn by themselves respectively Shops, many kinds of trees, Electric light posts, Transformers, Drinking water taps in the street, Upper and lower water Tanks were drawn and displayed. Then all streets were drawn together and formed as a whole area diagram

Following this all resources in every street was drawn and shown to be known to everybody.

Then the cross streets between one street and another were drawn. Also direct and alternative routes, cross streets were drawn legibly to be known by everybodyFrom this town area roads lead to other places such as Thiruvanmiyur Main Road, Duraippakkam Main Road etc were drawn and shown legibly.By this approach people in this area can protect themselves through evacuation routes for receiving Medicines and Govt. Dept. Helps this simple way of arrangement was made.This was very much helpful for all types of people to know total constitution of the town

SEASONAL MAP DIAGRAM:

Seasonal diseases, recovery from those diseases and their own Entrepreneurship resources were known to everybody by this seasonal Diagram.Through this diagram according to the past incidents during the months Oct – Dec i.e heavy rain season Typhoid fever. Dengue Fever, viral fever, during the months of Jan – March, from June – Sep, and even during the months Apl – June because of mosquitoes and severe heat. Jaundice like severe sickness and during the months of July –Aug. some ordinary fevers affect some people. That is why the problems occurred Rehabilitation camps were conducted at Govt.Hospital (GH) and Primary Health centre (PHC) PHC etc and all these are located within the radius of 2 k.m distance to 2.5 k.m, G.H and PHC are situated at the distance of 1k.m – 2k.m. Also the fire service station is located at the distance of 2.5 k.m and police station at the distance to 05k.m, and Thirvanmiyur Bus terminals is at the distance of 3km located All these were drawn in the Ven diagram.Through this seasonal diagram, every individual of the community knew in which month they would be engaged in jobs, and in which they would be economically poor Also they knew about communicable diseases being spread in their area and their precautionary measures. All the medical stores are located at the distance of 6.5k.m. It was located at the we distance of 0.5k.m.

   MOCK TRILL THRO ESCAPE METHODOLOGIES TRAINING:

Mock Trill Training was offered in order to develop their Self confidence and menthol attitude. By this training they could get the capacity of not only protecting themselves but also the people depending upon them In this Training especially young girls, young men and Boys were united together and through them this mock Trill Programme was performed

This programme was convened in the midst of the town, so that everybody in the town would know about the same clearly. According to that an young woman was protected by her. At first heart beat was checked by checking the pulse in wrist also the blues checked up on both sides of the fore head was checked – UP checking the blood peruses and pulse were taught easily We taught them various artificial respiratory technologies, in addition to this, we decease them about lungs, and its functions. When the period, drown in water hands must be folded some pressure must be given upon chest. Also to provide the affected person the breathing air the young women were kept lied, her mouth was opened upward. Then her mouth was closed with a nice cloth Respiratory air was sent through her mouth, in order to make her heart as active our palm must be kept upon the left chest of the affected person some pressure was given then it was proven that she came to the normal condition.Following this activities with the help of 2 persons, the affected one can be shifted easily from one place to another by combining both hands of helping persons.With help of 4 men / Women the affected person might be helped promptly by keeping the affected person (He /She) in lying condition. As the helping persons 4 are available to handle the affected person may be handled easily and in a safe manner So many types of practical demonstrations not only we can protect ourselves but also the aged people and children. This training was performed and explained with demonstration.    

DRINKING WATER CONSERVATION OF THRO TRAINING:

Through this heavy flood, at first, the affected source was drinking water. During the flood, many pipelines broke, that is why sewage water mixed with drinking water. Hence to the vulnerable community itself, taught how to conserve the drinking water. Through drinking water many diseases are spread. This idea is widely spread among the common people. That is why it was necessary to demonstrate water quality Test and it was performedOn the basis of this idea, in the flood affected areas Drinking water quality test was performed to leave the fear of the people from their mindsIn order to remove the fear of the people and help them to live in a healthy manner it was arranged to provide them the training Being used the Drinking water field water Tool Kid (FWTK) test box received from TWAD Board water sample was taken from the water supplied from Chennai Corporation the water quality Test was performed before the public.During the water Test it was explained that the chlorine mixture to be added must be in right quantity (per 1000 ltr water 4gm quantity of chlorine) so this chlorine can kill all the germs. That is why people can use the pure water without any fear. It was clearly explained to the community.Fluoride content must be in drinking water at right raio. That is why the fluoride content in water will protect the teeth without any defects. Fluoride content measure was tested whether it is in right quantity and found it was right.Stagnant water should not be found surrounding the houses. That is why we can protect ourselves from mosquitoes. This was also explained during the Training programme. Different types of experiments were performed and it was proven that there was not any problem found and it was explained well to the people in this area

LIVELIHOOD TRAINING WASHING OIL PHENOIL PREPARATION TRAINING

Women shall have the Economic Development in their lives. That is why this Training was  offered to them.By this Training women can prepare phenoil and sell the same through women groups easily. That suggestion was given during this TrainingWith the small amount of investment much profit can be earned. That of is why this phenoil preparation Training was offered. LIVELIHOOD TRAINING In order to develop the livelihood style women were provided simple method of this Training Generally people are frequently affected with poor people are affected with head ache, Head ache is considered as a disease. So everybody feels it is important to have head ache Balm in ready condition.At first paraffin was taken in a vessel and was heated with the help of a stove. Then the chemical named Menthol was added with paraffinThen in the bearable warm Thymol crystals were added and heated furtherAfter this Eucalyptus oil was added with this mixtureKeeping the stove in optimum temperature.After cooling this mixture for an hour the Balm was ready for use and the same was filled in small size boxes.Again opened the small size boxes, it was conformed the head ache balm was ready for use It was also advised that this Balm could be sold (Marketing Method) easily through women Groups

LIVELIHOOD TRAINING ON ORNAMENTAL MOLLUSCAN CRAFT:

Surrounding Chennai, numerous beaches are available. At the short and inter tidal areas of all beaches, diad molluscans are found. As : molluscan organisms are majority endangered list we have identified them, not to collect the every molluscan. We taught them, about collection of gastropods and bivalves normally cleaning, acid wash, and manufacture of ornamental materials. Also our trainers taught them, about making wall hangings key chains, Table weight an also curtain works. Production art o these ornaments materials are at low cost, and they be sold, at the Marina Beach and Eliot’s beach. Through this entrepreneurship they can earn reasonable income for their livelihood.
