PROJECT TITLE: FLOOD DISASTER RESPONSE AT TAMILNADU

REPORT TITLE: INTERVENTIONS FOR VULNERABLE COMMUNITY

 

To the women Self Help Group Members of the Flood disaster affected Thoothukudi District,  Thoothukudi Corporation and panchayat areas Organizations GlobalGiving and Chevaliar Roche Society Jointly Provided the Entrepreneurship Development Traninig Programme at the Derose Centre. These areas were affected by the rain flood during the year 2015. In this Training Programme Self Help Group members of the Corporation areas of Kurunji Nagar, Nethaji Nagar, StateBankColony, Ambetkar Nagar and the Panchayat union areas named Ayyanadaippu, Madhavan Nagar, Sorispuram, Anthoniyar Puram, Maravanmadam and Mullakkadu areas participated in this programme and benefited much.

 

LIVELIHOOD TRAINING AT THOOTHUKUDI DISTRICT

In this programme Entrepreneurship Development Trainers Mrs.Sudha Baskar & Mrs.Mary Participated and provided the Training during this training, for Alternative livelihood / additional income generation programme preparation phenoil and candle making were taught and practically was also demonstrated.

   CLEANING MATERIAL:   PHENOIL PREPARATION:

Ingradients necessary for the Phenoil Preparation

                Pure Cold Water - 10Ltr

  1. Phenoil oil         - 1 Ltr.
  2. Jasmine Scent     - 20ml.
  3. Colour Powder    - 10gm

         At first take 10 ltr quantity of water in a bucket and add 1ltr phenoil with the water and stir well. Then add the 20ml Jasmine scent with that and stir well again unit form is formed. Along with this mixture add 10gm water. Of colour powder and stir well after the preparation of phenoil, full the same in 1ltr. Plastic canes and apply seal upon the bottle lid. In this manner 10 bottles shall be filled in such a manner.

LIVELIHOOD TRAINING - CANDLE MANUFACTURE TRAINING AT THOOTHUKUDI DISTRICT

       For this manufacture 1kg measure of pure spherical paraffin was taken. Two candle Blocks to mould Rs.5 and Rs.2 candles were taken. Of these blocks in each side 25 moldings were available. In each block moldings were united by the bolts and nuts. They were removable. Wicks were kept in the molding areas of each side. Outer plates on both sides were fixed with the centre plate with the help of bolts and Nuts tightly. When paraffin is poured in to the blocks, It must not be leaked out. That is why a cover made up of Iron plate a vessel with right measure was taken and 500gm weighed paraffin was put into that within 10 minutes paraffin would begin to melt completely, slow down the flame of the stove. Then the melted paraffin shall be taken in a small vessel and it was poured into the candle molding Block. After it got filled in it was left to be cooled. Then the candle shall he cut off from the wick was cut off with the help of knife lop. Then this molding Block tray shall be immersed into the cold water. In was demonstrated and explained to, the trainees. After about 15 minutes tray was completely removed. Then the wicks were divided individually. Following that parking method was taught to the trainees. Following this they were asked to perform this demonstration individually. When are individually.           

 

DISASTER MANAGEMENT / SKILL DEVELOPMENT TRAINING AT THOOTHUKUDI DISTRICT

For this Training Dr.J.Tagore Derose, Director Chevaliar Roche Society Presided over the Programme Mr.A.Dhamotharan, MasterTrainer, Mrs.Sudha, Mrs.Mary, Entrepreneurship Development Trainers and Mrs.Suyampukani, FNA Teacher, Chevaliar Roche Society Participated and provided the Training for the beneficiaries.  

      Following intimations were taught during the Disaster Management skill Development Training

v    Readiness, Disaster Reduction, Plan Preparation skill Development for the vulnerable community mainly disables, widows, women and children Actions to be taken during the times of disaster were explained in detail.

v    During the times of disasters people living at the low lying areas must move from their locations and stay at the protected places. It was emphasized

v     Disaster people are affected much in majority during the disaster times that is why they and an protected areas must be identified and the priority shall be given to them. It was emphasized strongly

v    Before the rainy season encroachments of the water passage routes must be removed and rain water should be blocked Flood block actions must be taken in advance before the rainy season. It was emphasized strongly.

v    Also it was emphasized firmly to identify the resource places and evacuation routes

v    Emergency Telephone Nos. such as for Fire service & Recovery stations, Police station,

             Ambulance, Hospital, Red-cross society, NGO, Home guards, District Disaster Emergency  

            Centre must be collected It is necessary

v    It was emphasized to form village level Disaster Management Groups and to serve according

v    It was also emphasized Even through so many groups are available At least 1) Search& Recovery 2) First AID Groups must be formed and be provided necessary Training and encouraged to serve well

v    Readiness in Disaster management project is very important. It was emphasized that the plan must be made with the full details of the village

v    Importance of Risk Reduction in Disaster Management project and their methods were explained to people in detail

v    After the completion of skill Development Training Mrs.Suyampukani FNA Teacher, Chevaliar Roche society provided the Training for First AID. During this Training this training following informations were taught to the masters trainer group members     

PARTICIPATORY RURAL APPRAISAL  

Being followed the flood Disaster and Risk management Awareness Training programme, First AID Training Programme and participatory Rural Appraisal were held at Thoothukudi District  Maruthuwar Nagar. During this PRA Following Types of Diagrams were convened 1) Social mapping Diagram 2) Spider Web Diagram 3)  Ven Diagram ( Locally  called as Chappathi Diagram )

SOCIAL MAPPING:

In the street Floor the diagrams of Residential quarters of  Flood Disaster vulnerable community , life style of people, Entrepreneur of people, streets & Roads, Population – male, Female, Children, Aged, Alternative Abled domestic areas, street lights, Community centers, temples, Churches, Govt. buildings such as schools, Ankanvadies, Family card shop, VAO office, Panchayat office, Revenue Inspector Office, Post office, Street pipes, Higher stage water tanks, Hospitals etc. such locations of the infrastructures were drawn upon the floor and explained to the people      

SPIDER WEB DIAGRAM:

What was the position before 40 years and what is the position now of livelihood status of people in the Society, Food production, Agricultural, underground water, Flood, Rainfall, Fish catching, Sea erosion, Population, diseases, Nutrition (10Topics) were drawn through spider web diagram and explained to the people. Suggestion was offered to the people what they shall do to get the needy facilities

VEN DIAGRAM:

  It was explained through diagram about the resources beneficial to the people regarding Govt. Infrastructures, their locations, distances were mentioned in the diagram and explained to the vulnerable community. Govt. Dept. offices located in the village, private Buildings, Private Hospitals, Travel distance of people to fulfill their basic needs and to what town did they travel were mentioned in the diagram and explained in detail In this diagram. Most of the Self Help  Group women members participated and shared the information about their village among them. 

FLOOD DISASTER RESPONSE PROJECT AT CUDDALORE DISTRICT

 

At Cuddalore District, Manchakkuzhi Panchayat Village, Parangipettai Panchayat union of which was affected with rain flood during the year 2015 First Aid Training programme, Search and Recorvery Awareness Training Programme was offered for this programme. Secretary Manchakkuzhi Panchayat Village presided over the Training programme and project Manager, Chevaliar Roche Society participated and provided the Training programme.

AWARENESS TRAINING PROGRAMME: 

o        It was emphasized to deepen and set right the water passage routes such as canals, streams, Ponds, Lakes and to remove the encroachments.

o        Also an emphasization was genus about keeping ready of the sand filled gunny bags to block the ponds breakage etc.

o        In order to block the soil erosion, it was advised to plant Tree saplings on road sides and on banks of the ponds.

o        The Govt. and Non Govt. organizations announce the precaution for warnings, Being heard this announcement people in the low lying areas were asked to go to the protected places.

o        Trainer asked the beneficiaries to maintain the cleanliness and goad health to everybody during the flood and disaster times

o        We emphasized to drink the tested, protected well boiled and cooled water Every must do this.

o        It was also emphasized to form village level Disaster Management groups and to provide the continual Training

o        During the Training Trainer emphasized ‘’people must be in prepared condition before any disaster found’’.

o        During the times of Disaster, People who are in weak condition and the areas in weak position (huts, Low lying areas, those who live at river fed areas, people living in coastal areas must be identified and priority must be given to them.

o        People who live at village areas were emphasized to know the evacuation routes in order to escape at once when the disaster occurred.

o        Trainer also emphasized the trainees ‘’Disaster Management Group being formed in village level always must be in touch with the block level Recovery group and district level recovery groups

 

 

FIRST AID TRAINING PROGRAMME AT CUDDALORE DISTRICT

 

               Disaster affected people were emphasized that their urgent and foremost need is the First Aid, Medicine and recovery process

               Secondly the staying place, food protected drinking water and Health are very important. It was emphasized clearly.

               For the injury of the disaster affected people we must check at the injuries whether blook leaks from the injuries or is. There any bone fracture? Or Is he / she in the unconscious condition according to that Test First AID must be provide

               If there   is any bleeding for the disaster affected people it was described now it can be stopped and also the demonstration was done before the trainees.   

               It was also explained in what manner we could make the bandage by utilizing the materials we have. Explanation was given about in what manner they can be carried from one place to the another place

               It was also demonstrated in what manner we can provide the artificial respiration for the unconscious people

               What type of First Aid can be provided for the people in the desperate and tired condition and the demonstration was also performed before the trainees

               Those who have the continual diarrhea and those were bitten by smoke or by any poisonous insect. What type of First Aid to be provide? That was explained with practical demonstration.

       

         In this Training most of the men and women participated and benefited much   

 

Mr.Parthiban, Filed coordinator, MahatmaGandhi National Township Employment conformation project, Manchakkuzhi Panchayat delivered the vole of thanks to the participants of the Training programme.
