CHEVALIAR ROCHE SOCIETY

 FLOOD DISASTER RESPONSE AT TAMILNADU PROJECT

 

   Being united with the International organization Global Giving our NGO  Chevaliar Roche   Society is jointly running the project Flood Disaster Management project in Tamilnadu (At two coastal districts Thoothukudi and Cuddalore)  .  As a part of this project for the Dhalith people at Ayyanadaippu panchayat community welfare centre, in Thoothukudi panchayat, Thoothukudi district an capacity building  Training programme regarding Flood Disaster Management was offered. For this Training held at community welfare centre Mrs.R.Vasantha president, Union level federation presided over this Training in the presence of Mrs.V. Sumathi, Secretary, Union level federation and Mr.A.Dhamotharan, project manager, Chevaliar Roche Society provided the training. During the Training programme following informations were delivered to the affected community.

                                                                                                                                

 In formations delivered to the people during the Training programme:

     Before the rainy season itself we must take action for the flood prohibition.

Before the rainy season banks of the ponds, tanks, river beds must be strengthened to avoid the breaking of banks

 

vIn order to avoid the inflow of  water into the village canals must be renovated

vConstrictuon of houses in the low lying areas must be avoided. New houses must be   

Constructed at least 3 feet higher from the ground level

vEncroachments from the water passage routes

v So many tree saplings must be planted in the public places, so that the soil erosion

      Will be avoided

v Flood Disaster management proposal shall be prepared

  Points to be considered and followed during the Flood rainy season:

 

vDuring the time of continuous rain fall  early warning announcements being given by the Govt must be listened   

     carefully and kept up in right manner.

v People  living in the low lying areas must be accommodated in the safety places

vIn order to avoid the heavy flood sand bags must ready in the spot

vEmergency phone numbers must be ready in hand

vWhen the electric wires are found fallen in the water during the rainy season, people be careful 

    and this must be informed to the Electricity Board and the electricity connection must be cut off.

vDuring the times of Flood disaster

        After the completion of Awareness Training programme, Participatory Rural Appraisal was conducted with the participation people in the Ayyanadaippu panchayat area after co-coordinating them. In this evaluation people in the village participated with they shared about the full information of their village through sociological tools Vendiagram drawn by them. Following intimations were collected through PRA

   Information about the vulnerable stages through PRA;

    

 

v  Low – lying areas being affected by flood were identified

v  Broken area of senkulam being located in the Northern direction of the village was found out slum areas were identified. 

v  Evaluation was made regarding women children,  Aged people, differently abled, lepers, orphans and newly accommodated people

v  Evaluation was made regarding Buckle stream and brooks through Ven – Diagram.

v  Regarding  damaged buildings, houses Evaluation was made     

 

   Information about the facilities – available resource in the village:

 

vGovt and private offices were identified for accommodating the people in the sufety places

 

 

1)            Schools and colleges

2)            Wedding Halls, Public welfare buildings

3)            Govt & private Hospitals

4)            Drinking water Resources

5)            Ambulance Facilities

6)            Transportation Facilities to take people from one panchyat to another panchyat, ICP and location of Bokline machines were also    

 

  Alternative livelihood /  Entrepreneurship Training for the people who were affected by the flood Disaster: 

 

 Global Giving & Chevaliar Roche Society jointly provided the Entrepreneurship Training for the people in Ayyanadaippu panchayat of Thoothukudi in Thoothukudi Panchayat union manufacture of Head Ache Balm Training was offered to the participants of the training programme by Mrs, Sudha , Mrs,Mary EDP Trainers, Chevaliar Roche Society. They provided Training for the manufacture of Head Ache Balm with the investment of small amount of money by which we can get much profit. They also described in detail about the ingredients of Head Ache

 Ingredients (to manufacture 36 bottles of Head ache Balm

  1. Menthol 250 gm
  2. Thaimol 100gm
  3. Paraffin 50gm
  4. Eucalyptus oil

Preparation:

                  Tarn on the stove and a fry pan must be kept upon that. After it got heated 25 gm of Menthol shall be kept into that. When menthol is found boiled 50gm quantity of paraffin shall be added with that. When it is melted 100gm quantity of Thymol and 250 of Eucalyptus oil shall be added with that. After this mixture got boiled well and it came to the liquid from fry pan shall be moved away from the stove. After some time, Small size bottles may be collected and they shall be filled with this liquid manufactured. After this liquid becomes cooled, they may be closed with their lids. Then the name printed labels may be passed upon the bottles and they may be pasted upon the bottles and they may be marketed. In this Training programme, the local community of Ayyananadaippu Panchayat Participated and got benefited.  

 

Global Giving International Organization & Chevaliar Roche Society jointly united and provided the Disaster Management Training for the community in AmbedkarNagar area, Ward No.13, Thoothukudi Corporation,Flood affected area of  Thoothukudi District. For this Tranining programme Dr.J.Tagore Derose Director, CRS Presided over the function. Mr.Armstrong project Manager invited Affected victims participated in the programme. In the presence of Mrs. R.Lakshmi, Federation president Mr.A.Damotharan, Head Trainer, Chevaliar Roche Society provided the Training. During the time of Training following points were delivered to the participants of the Training.

 

  • If was emphasized not to put carbages in to the Drainage canals and those canals should be maintained properly and to make arrangements for the free flow of water.
  • Encroachments of the water Passage routes must be removed. People (Local community may form the Supervision communities
  • If was advised for the people to come forward to reform the streets and Roads so that the rain water will not be stagnant upon the roads.
  • Carbage wastes, Meat wastes are thrown away in the public places during the rainy seasons. That is why it stinks and Contaglous diseases are spread. Therefore these habits must be avoided.
  • If was also emphasized that prior warnings must be given to the people residing at low lying areas during the rainy season to move and stay at the safety places
  • As a safety precaution Evacuation routes
  •  Understanding about the must be found out Natural and Artificial Disaster attacks, losses reduction must grow among the public
  • If was emphasized to the participants.
  • If was emphasized to form First Aid, Search & Protection groups
  • If was also stressed to maintain properly the formed groups and to provide them training continually.

  

If we prepare the community so, then they can protect themselves.

Model Mock drill and First AID Programme:

  • If was explained practically how to rescue the Disaster affected community
  • If was also affected with the flood through the rescue Team knows swimming
  • In the topic of ‘’How to rescue the people entangled with in the demolished building  

       Without any defect to their lives explanation was given.

  • How can the bone fractured and aged people be carried in which manner such

      explanation was also given.

  • If was demonstrated how could the much affected people during the disaster be carried  

    in Stretcher method

  • If was described how could the public people have the contact with Ambulance, Fire

       Service Vehicles and how we could jointly in volve in rescue Services.

First Aid Training:   It was demonstrated practically in what manner the first aid could be done at once.

  • Controlling of hemorrhage, bandaging wounds were practically demonstrated.
  • If was also demonstrated practically bandage could be made to the bone fractured  

     Persons

  • If was also demonstrated how could the artificial respiration be given to a suffocated  

      person

  •  First AID to be given for persons bitter by snake & poisonous insets was demonstrated  

      Practically for the trainees

  • If was explained and practically demonstrated training was offered to the trainees to treat the fore accident met persons and in what manner they could be taken to the hospitals

      In this training Programme numerous people from AmbedkarNagar area participated and benefited. Finally Mrs.B.Sudha, Convenor. Chevaliar Roche Society delivered the vote of thanks.

 

FLOOD DISASTER RESPONSE AT CUDDALORE DISTRICT

Due to the Heavy Rainfall during the year 2015 flood occurred in many districts of Tamilnanu. Of which Cuddalore is one of the districts affected in major level. Cuddalore, Kurinjipadi, Parankipettai, Panrutti, Keerappalayam, Mel Bhuvanagiri Panchayat unions of Cuddalore district were affected much. Global Giving  and Chevaliar Roche Society, Tamilnadu State jointly Work out the flood Disaster management project. As a part of this project at Pachaiyankuppam Panchayat, Cuddalore Panchayat at union for the people in the Manakkuppam Village Awareness Training Programme regarding Flood Disaster Management. This Training was convened in 3 phases.

 They are

1)      Capacity building awareness Training

2)      Mock drill Programme

3)      First Aid Training

4)      Participatory Rural Appraisal survey

Mrs.Selvi President, Pachaiyankuppam Panchayat Union presided over the Training Programme in the presence of Mr.Narayanan, Secretary, Panchayat union Mr.A.Dhamotharan, Project Manager & Head Trainer Provided the Training for the people in the village. Cuddalore district is the most affected district of Tamilnadu frequently. That is why Training about all types of Disasters was offered in detail relevantly. During the Training programme, Following information’s were delivered to the people.  

 

Awareness Training Programme:        

  • Before the occurrence of cyclone rain streams, Ponds and lakes must be properly maintained  

      and protected. This point was emphasized to the community 

  • It was asked to remove the encroachments water line routes and to maintain them properly.
  • It was emphasized that the people in low lying areas must move from those areas and must  

     be Protected places.  

  • When a pond or lake is found broken it must be blocked by sand bags in order to avoid water   inflow into the village or town. It would be safety such sand bags must be in ready condition.
  • During the times of disaster low lying areas which have many huts would be affected soon. That is why they must be identified and the people in those areas must be protected. What manner may they be protected. It was emphasized
  • During the times of disaster Alternative livelihood people in the heavily damaged vulnerable areas, and also the aged, lepers women, Children and orphans must be given priority. And it was emphasized to take actions to redeem them very urgently.
  • Safety places must be identified and the evacuation routes also must be known by everybody. It was emphasized during the awareness training programme
  • Emergency phone Nos. Such as of police station, Fire service station,Revenue Dept, Ambulance Centre, Hospitals, Red gross must be ready for the vulnerable community. This idea was emphasized during the Training.
  • It was emphasized to form Disaster Management Groups , and to provide them the proper training and to serve well in the villages
  • During the seasons of rain floods protected and boiled water must be used for drinking. It was emphasized.
  • Prepared reduction, Management performance Recovery, First Aid etc in above said to pies Training was offered cleanly.      

Mock Drill and First Aid:       

  • During the times of disaster in what manner may the affected people be recovered and carried to safe places and hospitals, It was demonstrated practically
  • Training was offered in what manner people might protect themselves during the disaster times by utilizing or using Bed sheets, cots, chairs, dhotis, sarees, Plantain stem wooden planks etc. in detail.
  • During the times of rain flood how are contagious diseases spread through water It was explained in detail.
  • It was explained  how we could shout,  gather a croud, united them and to take them to the protected places
