Kalanjiyam's villages in Kancheepuram district were considerably affected by the incessant /heavy rains in November and December 2016. Kalanjiyam appealed to all our friends and well-wishers and were able to mobilize different types of support- including clothing, household items etc., in additional to financial support. Friends donated through global giving and this has made a significant contribution and supported more than 50 families who had lost their homes.
We went through a process of screening and identifying individuals/families that needed support to rebuild their houses. A committee of local well-wishers was formed. We requested all who wanted to support to provide us with applications, a letter requesting for support, photo of the damages and a reference letter from local leaders vouching for the damages.
After receiving these applications, Kalanjiyam staff went to the houses and assessed the damages, spoke to the families and got first hand information of the needs and family's ability to contribute. The committee members then visited the applications houses and again talk to the family and assessed the requirements for rebuilding and cost.
Afar these process 50 families were short listed over a period of two months and the support was provided to the families in the form of check. Some families received partial amounts for rebuilding of one wall or some parts of the house while others were provided support for complete rebuilding due to the heavy damages incurred. The committee members also ensured that the rebuild house would be long lasting accordingly decided on the required materials. The families also were asked to contribute in the form of labour for rebuilding the houses. The process of rebuilding has started and is expected to be completed by the end of March.
