Your generosity is paving the way for BIG plans here in Peru! I’m so excited to share how your gifts towards First Aid Kits for our Community Health Workers have already been put to great use.
Dr. Claudia Bouvier has been busy purchasing supplies to stock first aid kits for 55 local health workers in indigenous communities in the Andes of Peru. So far, she has purchased Sam Splints (an incredibly versatile essential for any first aid kit that allows for quick and easy stabilization of anything from neck injuries to broken ankles) for all of our health workers, durable, customized first aid bags, and over 100 pounds of dressings, bandage shears, gauze, steristrips, and other first aid essentials. WOW!!
Access to healthcare in Sacred Valley Health's partner communities is extremely limited by poor road conditions and lack of transportation. Having promotoras to provide quality first aid can be the difference between life and death. Dr. Bouvier will bring first aid kits with her to Peru this coming August to distribute to all 55 Sacred Valley Health promotoras de salud (that’s Spanish for health workers). During her visit, we will be hosting promotoras for 2 days of advanced first aid training followed by 2 days of community-wide first aid fairs. This will be an amazing opportunity for promotoras to receive new kits and supplies, learn the skills they need to provide life-saving care for their neighbors, and then teach some of those skills to their communities. When SVH staff conducted surveys in our partner communities last May, one of the most common requests we received from community members was, “We want more first aid training!” Thanks to your support, that is becoming a reality.
This is an ongoing project, so we still need your help! Dr. Bouvier is hoping to purchase some additional specialty items - like hemostatic bandages to quickly stop bleeding wounds - before her trip. We are also raising funds to offset training costs such as transportation for promotoras to and from trainings, healthy meals provided during training days, and supplies for community first aid fairs. It’s not too late to support this project and make a real difference in the lives of Peruvian health workers and their communities.
