Kidsave's Weekend Miracles program in Houston, Texas, gives older foster youth (ages 9-17) a chance to find forever families and lifelong mentors. In partnership with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Service and Harris County Protective Services for Children and Adults, we work together to give children the opportunity to find lasting connections and adoptive parent(s) through monthly events and weekend visits that enables the child's voice in choosing their family.
Nearly 1,300 teens in foster care age out of the Texas foster care system each year without a stable adult in their lives. The issue is compounded as there are not enough foster homes and too many kids living in residential treatment centers. Because of the limited capacity for these kids, many end up living in motels without a placement every month. The impact of being in foster care can cause learning disabilities, psychological problems, and other adverse outcomes.
Weekend Miracles is a proven approach for finding lifelong mentors and adoptive families for older kids in foster care in Texas. Kidsave introduces them to potential adoptive families enabling families to meet kids who are otherwise hidden from view. These new adults in their lives help them with school and engage them in the community. Best of all, the kids meet people who are interested in adopting and mentoring older kids - leading to permanent families and connections to caring adults.
We've helped more than 600 kids in foster care find adoptive families, legal guardians, and lifelong mentors. When a child has at least one stable adult in their life, they have a better chance for success and are overall better prepared for the challenges of adulthood.
