Fighting the Zika Virus

MAP International is responding immediately to fulfill field requests for strong mosquito repellants, pain relievers and antibiotics.  Our primary goal is to protect mothers and their unborn children from this virus that is known to cause birth defects and poor pregnancy outcomes.

The WHO’s director-general said that where the virus is active there’s been a “steep increase in the birth of babies with abnormally small heads and in cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome.”  Both can cause severe developmental issues, potential paralysis and sometimes death.

There is no vaccine for the Zika virus, which is why our efforts to control it are key.  MAP is seeking support to provide pain relievers, antibiotics and mosquito repellent to our teams and partners in the affected regions.  Your donation today will provide urgently needed protection supplies to mothers and children in need in Latin America.

We know that you would do anything for those you love this Valentine's Day, so would we. 365 days a year, our hearts lie with children and families in need in the most underserved countries in the world.  This Valentine's Day, the need is even more pressing due to the rapid spread of the Zika virus.  

At first blush, the symptoms don't sound that bad - a rash, joint pain and headaches.  All things that we consider very minor.  But what if you were one of the thousands of pregnant women in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, the Dominican Republic and other Zika affected countries?  That little mosquito bite can cause a lot of damage to your unborn child. A minor inconvenience now becomes a major health crisis.

Main Concerns:

• Countries with high Zika infection rates show an increase in microcephaly and Guillain-Barre syndrome in newborns.
• There is no medication to cure Zika, prevention is critical.
• The Zika virus is spreading rapidly and the CDC has declared it an international concern.
