Summary

Although the threat of the Zika virus has significantly declined in the southern United States, medical teams are still actively engaged in its treatment and prevention in Central and South America. MAP International (MAP) continues in its primary goal to protect pregnant women from Zika by providing mosquito repellents. MAP has provided over $140 million in medicines and supplies for treatment and prevention of Zika in affected regions. For more information, visit www.map.org/zika.

Challenge

CNN is reporting that the mosquito born Zika virus is "now spreading explosively" in Central and South America. The WHO's director-general said that where the virus is active there's been a "steep increase in the birth of babies with abnormally small heads and in cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome." Both can cause severe developmental issues, potential paralysis and sometimes death.

Solution

MAP International is responding immediately to fulfill field requests for strong mosquito repellants, pain relievers and antibiotics. Our primary goal is to protect mothers and their unborn children from this virus that is known to cause birth defects and poor pregnancy outcomes.

Long-Term Impact

There is no vaccine for the Zika virus, which is why our efforts to control it are key. MAP is seeking support to provide pain relievers, antibiotics and mosquito repellent to our teams and partners in the affected regions. Your donation today will provide urgently needed protection supplies to mothers and children in need in Latin America.
