ActionAid has been running programs in Ituri Province (DRC), one of the affected areas, for many years. We are currently working with local communities and partners to mount a response to stop the spread of Ebola, focusing on the safety and protection of those who are most at risk, especially women and girls.
The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has declared an outbreak of Ebola in the country's northeast region, just months after critical public health infrastructure was weakened by funding cuts and the dismantling of USAID. To date, there have been over 500 suspected cases and more than 130 deaths reported. To make matters worse, prolonged conflict in the area is further exacerbating the outbreak, as many IDPs are without proper access to healthcare and crucial contact tracing.
ActionAid is 1. Distributing PPE, improving hygiene and safety, and helping to slow the spread of the virus 2. Installing handwashing facilities and screening checkpoints in schools, public spaces, and displacement sites 3. Disseminating trusted information and promoting safe practices through awareness-raising campaigns 4.Providing cash transfers to women and girls in vulnerable households 5. Supporting women's groups to develop local protection and risk reduction plans
We've seen what can happen when disease outbreaks are left unchecked. Please consider pitching in what you can, as every dollar makes a difference at this stage. Your generosity allows us to do our part to stop the spread of Ebola, protect impacted communities, and provide immediate life-saving relief to those who need it, both now and in the future.
