In Peru, nearly 30% of the population lives in extreme poverty, particularly affecting children in urban slums. This project aims to improve the nutritional status of children from 0 to 3 years by educating parents on healthy eating, positive parenting, and proper child care. With one of the highest rates of childhood anemia in Latin America, our focus is on teaching parents how to prepare iron-rich foods, ensuring their children's healthy growth and development.
In Peru, nearly 30% of the population lives in extreme poverty (INEI, 2023), with children in urban slums being especially vulnerable. Anemia affects 4 out of 10 children, and chronic malnutrition impacts 12% nationwide. These conditions prevent children from reaching their potential and hinder their ability to thrive. Parents often lack knowledge to prepare nutritious meals and make informed choices about food supplies, leading to poor health outcomes for their children.
This project empowers parents in southern Lima with nutritional education and training on preparing iron-rich meals. We monitor children's health and growth and support pregnant women to ensure they follow proper nutrition for healthy birth weights and the well-being of both mother and child. By involving local health professionals and community leaders, we create a sustainable, culturally relevant solution for long-term improvements in nutrition and health.
By improving children's nutrition in their early years, we lay the foundation for healthier, more successful futures. Well-nourished children are more likely to perform well in school, break the cycle of poverty, and contribute positively to their communities as they grow. With sustained efforts, this project will help reduce childhood malnutrition rates in the region, improving both individual and community well-being for generations to come.
