Bringing the carts to Tierra Bomba
We proudly announce the inauguration of the first temporary storage facility for Recyclables in Tierra Bomba! The local recyclers of Tierra Bomba now have a safe working space, where they can separate, pack and store the recyclable materials they collect from 60% of the households in Tierra Bomba! That´s right! What an amazing example, approximately 60% of the houses in this community now separate at the source and give recyclable materials to their local recyclers whom they know by name. These men, Jesús and Ramón, are true environmental heroes serving their community and avoiding plastic residues from falling into the sea. They are part of the first constituted and formalized local recyclers association of Tierra Bomba. The lives of these two local recyclers have been greatly impacted, not only through the additional income they receive for the sale of recyclables, but also because their job is now valued and recognized by the community. Congratulations to the Tierra Bomba Recyclers Association!
Thanks to the support of Avene Colombia and a host of colombian artists and influencers, the educational and clean up campaign “Skin Protect, Ocean Respect” was a success. On May 17th two dermatological and environmental awareness conferences for around 200 young students were held simultaneously at the schools in Tierra Bomba and Punt Arena. In the afternoon, an art and environment workshop using recycled materials was held at the Dones Foundation Center with another 100 students from Tierra Bomba. On May 18th, a major beach cleanup took place, with local artists painting a mural inviting to protect the ocean and where approximately 200 volunteers collected 417 kilos of residues! Of these: 35 kilos of plastic, 59 kilos of plastic PET bottles, 15 kilos of Styrofoam, 8 kilos of single use disposable plastic utensils, 169 kilos of glass – donated to the Green Apple Foundation, 16 kilos of metal and 115 kilos of ordinary trash. The recyclable material was given to local recyclers from Punta Arena and the garbage was taken out of the island by the trash company. Many thanks to all who supported and to all the wonderful volunteers that made it happen!!!
