Recyclers of Tierra Bomba
Thanks to your generosity Fundacion Bahia y Ecosistemas de Colombia has been able to develop activities to leave installed capacity in the community and strengthen recycling programs and environmental education in the communities of the island of Tierra Bomba.
We developed two major environmental campaigns, starting with a great underwater and coastal clean up in Tierra Bomba - organized with the community and other organizations on October 25th and 26th, which included previous sensitization of the community and a Green Exchange, giving vegetables and fruits in exchange for recyclables. The clean up activity involved 170 people who collected 1.5 tons of waste, of which 1 ton of recyclables were given to local recyclers. The second clean up was held in the neighboring island community of Punta Arena, as part of the Colombia Limpia initiative, with the participation of 100 volunteers who on November 22nd collected 82 kilos of mostly plastic from beaches, preventing them from falling into the bay of Cartagena!
The Local Committee of Environmental Overseers of Tierra Bomba was formed, which will be responsible for monitoring functions to ensure that the programs established in the solid residue management plan are developed. This local Committee was approved by the Community Council of Tierra Bomba, began its training process on December 4th and will be presented to the entire community with the launch of the "My Cleaner and Prettier Street Contest" this december, as a strategy to promote community participation and separation at the source.
For its part, the Association of Recyclers of Tierra Bomba has delivered 4.6 tons of recyclable waste to the Cartagena Amigable Recycling Facility during the last 3 months, which we transported aboard the Antares 71. The recyclers continue with their training program, and on December 3rd graduated from the leadership module based on emotional intelligence. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to contribute with the refreshments for the training workshops of the recyclers in the Recycling Facility.
"We are very proud of all the opportunities and degrees!" says Angie Moncaris, recycler who along with her husband Juan Carlos Herrera, recycler, graduated not only from the module but also from high school, with a scholarship from the Tierra Bomba Educational Institution along with another 14 night students. Congratulations to the graduated recyclers!
Thank you very much for your contributions that have made it possible to continue with the fight against plastic pollution in our bay and our sea!
