So far, HDI has raised $1500 out of $9545 for the pig cooperative project in Cyaruzinge village. With just $500 more, we will be able to start building the pig corral! Although our progress over the past few months has been limited by funds, we have supported the village through other nutrition initiatives that will supplement the pig project.

For example, this summer HDI hosted a team of 7 students from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill that raised nearly $6,000 to implement a nutrition project in Cyaruzinge village. They conducted a nutrition survey of all 51 households in the village, provided nutrition interventions for 30 severely malnourished children under age 5, built 40 kitchen gardens to provide the community with fresh vegetables, and educated the community on nutrition, hygiene/sanitation, and the basics of cooking vegetables. This project has provided everyone in the community with a sustainable source of fresh vegetables. This has been a good supplement to their diet, which consists mainly of potatoes and rice, but we look forward to the completion of the pig cooperative to give the community access to a rich source of protein.

Thank you so much for your support thus far. Your contribution has put us within reach of advancing the pig cooperative project. We will be conducting a fundraising campaign in October for the pig cooperative and hope to start building in November. We will keep you updated on the fundraiser. In the meantime, you can help by telling your friends about the project so we can make this dream a reality as early as November!
