The Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger has quickly adapted our operations during these unprecedented times to support those most affected during the COVID-19 crisis.
As more of our family, friends, and neighbors are losing their jobs, people who have never faced food insecurity are being forced to contemplate how to make ends meet. Some must immediately look for food resources, as they apply for assistance through SNAP, unemployment, and more. We hear their anxiety as we talk with them on the SNAP Hotline and as we work to support our local food pantry and soup kitchen partners. Our primary goal right now is to connect as many people as we can to the food resources they need.
This year due to COVID-19, for the first time in 24 years, we were forced to shift our annual Race Against Hunger 5K Run/Walk to a virtual event to ensure the safety of our volunteers, team members, and participants. Funds raised will support technology upgrades to our SNAP Hotline to help us manage a significant increase in the number of calls we are receiving from thousands of people who have recently lost their jobs and are in need of food stamps. It will also help us expand our efforts to assist the region’s food pantry and soup kitchen partners currently struggling to keep up with the high demand for food and finding safe ways to deliver it to people who need it. Fundraising for the Coalition’s Race Against Hunger runs until May 31, 2020.
