At the Coalition Against Hunger we take a unique aproach to strengthening the existing food network in Philadelphia while advocating for the larger changes that will eliminate food insecurity.
One major focus of our work so far this year has been bolstering our Victory in Partnership (VIP) Program, which supports local volunteer-led and -operated food pantries and soup kitchens throughout the Philadelphia region. Based on the input of our VIP partners, we share tools, offer resources, facilitate training, and provide connections to additional funding and food for their programs. We do this through quarterly group meetings, an email newsletter, and one-on-one consultation with our Community Food Resource Coordinator.
Two new ways that we are supporting our VIP partners this year are through quarterly VIP site tours and by creating monthly VIP member highlight videos. We convene members for site tours at a given VIP location so that members can learn about the resources other partners are offering and network with one another to facilitate information and resource sharing, explore collaboration, and apply any valuable information to their own programs. Our monthly VIP highlights begin with an on-site interview by the Coalition Against Hunger's Community Food Resource Coordinator, Gavin Perez-Canto, which we record on video and edit to share with our community. Shining a spotlight on the work of the pantries and soup kitchens serving our communities helps educate our greater community on the issue of food insecurity and the programs available for those who are seeking resources. It also results in a high-quality video that our VIP partners can use to spread the word about their programs - one partner even used our video in a grant application!
