Fight famine with farming in South Sudan

We work in an area of South Sudan which has faced years of relentless flooding.  People have lost their homes, moved to new areas, and then faced severe flooding again.  The result has been more people occupying limited spaces.   Our farmers who just a few years ago had large gardens of planted vegetables, now are living in cramped quarters with very limited land for a garden.

 With the change in climate comes a change in approach.   For the farmers who find themselves with limited space, we still provide seeds and tools with the expectation that the harvest will be small.   If a household has no space for a garden, we are working on a four-acre community garden.   It will be fenced, to keep the cows out, and will have an irrigation system so that during the dry season access to water will be readily available.

The United Nations reports that half the population of South Sudan faces an acute hunger crisis.  Our program cannot change a nation.  But in Fangak County where we work hundreds of households are able to grow food to feed their families.  This week we distributed seeds to 250 families.  Another distribution will occur in early September.  The farmers receiving the seeds will still have a difficult time feeding their families. Their situation is far from ideal, but it's not the crisis felt elsewhere.  That's the goal of this program and the reason we need your help.

In just 2-3 months the new crops will ready for harvest and we will be ready to plant again.
