Fight against malnutrition in Goma

In Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, malnutrition continues to place vulnerable children at serious risk, particularly in communities such as Mugunga. Young children are among those most affected, and available local information indicates that the situation is particularly alarming in some areas, where reported levels of malnutrition have reached as high as 72%. Behind these figures are children whose growth, health, and future are at risk, and families who often struggle to access adequate nutrition and essential health services. Our project, Fight Against Malnutrition in Goma, was created to respond to this urgent need by supporting the nutritional care of children under five and strengthening the ability of families and local communities to prevent and respond to malnutrition.

The project has a total funding target of $32,000. To date, we have not yet raised funds, but our collaboration with GlobalGiving gives us an important opportunity to reach international donors and mobilize the resources needed to move from preparation to action. We are currently identifying qualified trainers and community learners who will participate in the planned capacity-building activities. Once resources are secured, the project will focus on screening and supporting malnourished children, providing ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) where appropriate, training health and community health workers, and educating mothers and grandmothers on nutrition, hygiene, breastfeeding, and other practices that can help protect children from malnutrition.

The expected impact is significant: fewer children suffering from acute malnutrition, improved nutritional status among children under five, reduced risk of preventable child deaths, and stronger community capacity to identify and respond to malnutrition early. We know that lasting change cannot be achieved by one organization alone. Every contribution can help us bring this response closer to the children and families who need it most.
