Growing Uganda's Spirulina Network

By Kali L Kirkendall | Executive Director

Hello!

Thank you. Because of you, more than 2,500 children in Uganda are getting spirulina, a protein-rich superfood that helps fight malnutrition. Now we're working to double that number with your support and the help of the Glasscock Family Foundation.

Sarah's story

In Byumba, Sarah cares for orphans and vulnerable people in her community. With limited resources, every meal is a challenge, for her own family and for the many children who depend on her. Through our small grants program, we have helped establish an animal husbandry project and provide spirulina to the 100 members in her organization for the past year. With your support, she is building a community where no child goes to bed hungry or malnourished. Over this year and the organizations and partners we have chatted with, it's even more to crucial to remember you are working with and for to affect change in a community. We are grateful to have had Sarah as a partner for the last few years.

Where things stand

Blue Atlas sponsored the creation of the Spirulina Development Institute (SDI) and built its infrastructure. Today SDI runs independently, growing spirulina in simple ponds and getting it to more than 2,500 children. Our aim is to continue to support ithrough outreach to create a sustainable financial future.

Spirulina grows fast, uses little land and packs a lot of protein and nutrients into a small serving, 3 grams a three to four times a week. For children facing malnutrition, a routine supply makes a real difference.

Building sales pipelines

To reach more children, SDI needs steady buyers, not just donations. We are creating sales pipelines by expanding our network of organization and community partners, so spirulina reaches families well beyond the front range of the Rwenzori mountains.

Every sale helps SDI stand on its own as the spirulina hub for Uganda. It keeps the ponds running, pays local staff and makes it possible to provide spirulina to children on a routine basis, not just once in a while.

Our goal: double the reach

Our aim is to double the number of children receiving spirulina on a routine basis, from more than 2,500 today to over 5,000.

Your gift helps us:

  • Bring on new organization and community partners to distribute spirulina
  • Support SDI as it grows production to meet new demand
  • Reach more caregivers like Sarah, and the children who depend on them

Farmers and organizations are doing the hard part. Our goal is to help. Simply. And we do that through your support.
