Approximately two years ago, Moving the Goalposts (MTG) initiated a clean energy project aimed at strengthening the organisation’s sustainability through the adoption of renewable energy solutions. The project sought to reduce electricity costs, improve energy reliability, and redirect operational savings towards expanding programmes that support girls and young women within our communities.

Beyond organisational sustainability, the project also aimed to promote the adoption of green energy within the community by demonstrating clean and affordable alternatives to conventional energy sources. Through this initiative, MTG envisioned contributing towards greater energy independence, reduced household energy costs, and improved economic resilience for families in the community.

We are pleased to report that the project has now been successfully completed. Significant savings are being realised since we went live in November 2025. The system was optimized and some components improved between November 2025 and May 2026.

The original estimated costs of $30,000 was significantly reduced due to a strategic management decision to utilise an alternative roofing structure instead of undertaking the initially planned roof upgrade as well as the costs of the panels and batteries being lower than initially projected following a competitive bidding process. These adjustments still allowed us to achieve the intended project objectives. The total project cost was therefore reduced to $12,975 against which a total of $6,000 was raised in donations. The remaining balance was internally financed by the organisation, with the expectation that part of the cost will be recovered through the planned sale of the now redundant diesel generator and electricity cost savings.

The installation consisted of 24 panels of 550watts each and four batteries of 5 kw each.

The system is currently meeting all our operational demands and having, as expected, excess production capacity. We are currently investigating opportunities to commercialise this excess production.

The project stands as an important milestone in MTG’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and community-centred development.

 Thank you for your support!
