For young adult cancer patients, cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy may damage their reproductive organs. Prior to any surgery or treatment they will need to decide on fertility preservation. We will support 50 young adult cancer patients, aged 18-35 years old who wish to have children in the future. The funding will cover the medication and drugs, and we also provide financial assistance for freezing of the eggs, embryo, ovarian tissue or sperm for up to two years.
Every year the number of people being diagnosed with cancer has increased and the age of those with a diagnosis had dropped drastically. Education on the symptoms of cancer and early detection have helped increase cancer survivorship. But receiving the shocking news is never easy.
The Hong Kong Cancer Fund is collaborating with a number of public sector hospital, HKU and CUHK to pioneer a FP support service for this group of cancer patients. Our funding will cover the medication and drugs required to induce ovulation for women and the laboratory charges required to perform the procedure. We will also provide financial assistance for freezing of the eggs, embryo, ovarian tissue or sperm for up to two years.
Our objective is to not only raise awareness of the importance of FP but also to support the costs and psychological impact and help alleviate some of the stresses associated with this aspect of their cancer diagnosis.
