Dear wonderful donors,
All the Global Civic Sharing(GCS) members hope you and everyone are safe and healthy during these unprecedented times. And also, a big thank you for your support!
The staff of GCS Kenya did interviews with potential participants who are willing to become Bodaboda(motorcycle taxi) operators or who are already in this business for the last few weeks.
After meeting with 17 women in Uasin-Gishu County, we decided to work with ten women. So let's hear their stories!
Story of Naomi
Naomi is 23 years old, and she finished high school in 2016. But she wasn't able to go through college because of financial constraints. So instead, she said she learned how to operate a bodaa from her elder brother, a bodaa operator.
When we asked what motivated her to join the sector, she said, "I needed to put food on the table and learn to earn my own income. I also thought it would be interesting to challenge an area that women are less interested in."
She says that she has been operating on Chepterit and Baraton routes. She also has a contract with a local dairy farm where she has done milk delivery.
Story of Edna
Edna is 37 years old and married with 4 children. She has operated Bodaboda since 2019. She said that the income from the motorbike has enabled her to supplement the income from her husband to educate her children and even put up a small motorcycle accessories shop.
She joins the sector because her husband is unemployed and does small scale farming, whose income is insufficient, so she decided to try the Bodaboda sector. She initially bought her bike in 2016 and employed a young man who wasn't honest, especially giving the agreed daily income to her. This motivated her to learn how to operate the Bodaboda and do the business by herself despite the challenges.
Now GCS and ten female Bodaboda operators are ready to work together! The next step will be supporting some participants who don't have a driver's license to acquire it and organise them into the Bodaboda operators' self-help groups.
Please keep supporting our project. We will keep updating you!
