The women in villages, like Tourari, around Timbuktu have never had formal schooling and have literacy rates close to zero. This history of no formal schooling has created a generational lack of prioritizing education for children at the governmental level and within the family.
The project's main goal is to advance the education of women in Tourari through teaching literacy and use of literacy to provide tools to empower women to improve their hard daily lives and create a generational change in their families, particularly with respect to girls, of the need to prioritize education. Please see attached document which highlights the Female Adult Literacy Program.
The planned Female Adult Literacy Program will be a significant and important tool in helping Caravan to Class achieve our mission of "bringing literacy to villages around Timbuktu." In addition, it will empower the women of Tourari to be a strong voice in their community and families for education and also share the joy of what it feels like to learn to read.
