This project will raise the educational attainment of more than 500 young people by transforming the quality of teaching in Gbarpolu County high schools. Working with the District Education office, we will: 1) Provide tools, resources & training for teachers and students 2) Integrate technology in learning activities & nurture innovation 3) Embed Financial Literacy as a subject in the curriculum 4) Strengthen safeguarding policies and run peer-led consent workshops in the community
Every year, more than 500 students from Gbarpolu fail their examinations and many leave school with very limited prospects. The school district is poor and severely under resourced; lacking basic furniture, equipment and text books. Students are vulnerable to assault and exploitation by under-paid teachers, many of whom lack updated skills, tools and resources to teach effectively. There is a shortage of STEM teachers and subjects like Enterprise and Computing are not taught or applied at all.
Using our experience & expertise, we will assemble an experienced team to address these problems by: 1) equipping teachers with core skills and resources to teach effectively 2) supplying schools with essential tools to enhance the young people's learning & improve their results 3) supporting the District Education Office to implement changes necessary for student welfare 4) training teachers and students to share their new knowledge 5) encouraging innovation & parental support/collaborations
Gbarpolu would be an exemplar district with the best examinations success rates in the county. Young people would leave high school more confident of their future prospects and able to compete in the global knowledge economy. The school district would be better resourced & exploitation of students by teachers would be greatly reduced. Financial literacy, enterprise & computing would be embedded in the school curriculum. Other districts would be supported to replicate this process successfully.
