Feeding America Fight Hunger in US

by Feeding America

The process of getting food requires a dynamic infrastructure and sophisticated management. Feeding America secures donations from national food, grocery manufacturers, retailers, shippers, packers and growers and from government agencies . Feeding America then moves donated food to member food banks who distribute food through meal programs that serve 46 million people each year.

Hunger and poverty often go hand in hand, but poverty is not the ultimate determinant of food insecurity. People living above the poverty line are often at risk of hunger as well. Research demonstrates that unemployment, rather than poverty, is a better predictor of food insecurity among people living in the US. Recent government data in 2014, show that 46.7 million people (15 percent) were in poverty, including 15.5 million (21 percent) children under the age of 18.

Last year alone, we secured a total of 967 million pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables for people in need. By providing people in need with healthy, nutritious food we can not only help them get enough to eat, but also give them hope for a brighter, healthier future. The nationwide network of food banks provides more than 3.6 billion meals to virtually every community in the United States through food pantries and meal programs.

Long-Term Impact

Hunger and health are deeply connected. People who are food insecure are disproportionally affected by diet-sensitive chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure and according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, food insecurity is also linked to many adverse effects to overall health. 58% of the households served by Feeding America have at least one member living with high blood pressure. With your gift, we can continue to source nutritious food to improve client health.
