Summary

GEFD plans to set up a women-led central kitchen in a Marib IDP camp to deliver hot, nutritious lunches to 40 displaced families during the peak of extreme weather from May to August 2026. The project offers fire-safe cooking facilities and healthy meals, helping vulnerable families cope with temperatures reaching 50C, strong winds, and flooding. Displaced women lead the operations using "Cash-for-Work" stipends, promoting community food security and safety while fostering local leadership

Challenge

In Marib's Alwadi district, 40 displaced families face a dangerous peak season from May to August. Temperatures reaching 50C and strong desert winds make open-fire cooking extremely risky; a single spark could ignite and destroy numerous fabric tents. Additionally, women-despite being the main caregivers-lack visibility in leadership roles. Without access to a safe and climate-adapted cooking space, families constantly face dangers of fire, malnutrition, and heatstroke just to survive.

Solution

GEFD will establish a central, fire-proof community kitchen powered by solar ventilation to shield 40 families from 50C heat and desert winds. By consolidating cooking in a protected workspace, we eliminate the risk of tent fires and provide hot, nutritious lunches during the peak summer crisis. Crucially, the project is women-led; we provide "Cash-for-Work" stipends and training to displaced women who manage all operations, safety protocols, and resource distribution.

Long-Term Impact

Beyond immediate survival, this project transforms 40 families from aid-dependent to community-resilient. By placing women in management roles, we build a foundation for local leadership and economic dignity that outlasts the five-month cycle. The solar-powered infrastructure serves as a permanent model for safe, sustainable desert living. This initiative proves that women-led, climate-smart solutions can effectively bridge the gap between emergency aid and long-term stability.
