Progress Report – Preschool Nutrition and Hygiene Support Programme

1. Introduction

Malnutrition and poor dietary diversity continue to affect preschool children in low-income communities in the Jaffna District. Many children begin their school day without adequate nutrition, negatively affecting their concentration, physical growth, immunity, and school attendance. Both boys and girls are impacted, with some children showing signs of low energy, reduced attentiveness, and frequent illness.

To address these challenges, a school-based nutrition and hygiene support programme was implemented in two selected preschools. The programme aimed to improve children’s daily nutritional intake, promote healthy hygiene practices, and create a supportive learning environment where children can grow and learn in a healthy and safe setting.

As part of the programme implementation, children’s growth and nutritional status were regularly assessed to monitor progress and identify early health concerns.

2. Key Activities ImplementedDaily Nutrition Support

  • Distributed 150 ml of fresh milk daily to each child to improve protein and calcium intake.
  • Provided daily portions of locally sourced seasonal fruits, including banana, papaya, guava, mango, and wood apple.
  • Developed weekly nutrition menus to promote balanced dietary intake using locally available foods.
  • Procured milk and fruits from local farmers and vendors, supporting the local economy and community livelihoods.
  • Conducted regular assessments of children’s growth, nutritional status, and attendance patterns.
  • Monitored indicators such as weight, height, energy levels, and general wellbeing to identify early signs of undernutrition.

 3. Progress and Impact

The programme has shown positive progress within the participating preschools.

  • Teachers observed improved attendance, with fewer absences related to illness and fatigue.
  • Children demonstrated better concentration, energy, and participation in classroom and play activities.

4. Challenges Faced

  • Rising prices of milk and fruits continue to affect the sustainability and scalability of the programme.
  • Limited funding restricts expansion to additional underserved preschools.

These challenges are being addressed through local sourcing strategies, continued parental awareness efforts, and engagement with donors and community stakeholders for sustainable support.

5. Plans for the Next Phase

The next phase of the programme will focus on:

  • Conducting nutrition education sessions for parents
  • Strengthening child growth monitoring systems to track measurable health improvements
  • Exploring sustainable community-supported feeding approaches
  • Enhancing hygiene promotion activities within preschool environments
