In Sri Lanka, child malnutrition is a critical issue, with 15.3% underweight, 21.4% stunted, and 14.6% wasted. These rates are worse in poor and post-conflict areas. Many children go to school hungry, affecting focus, health, and learning. This School Meal Program will deliver one nutritious meal each school day to children in 1000 schools with high malnutrition, improving attendance, cognitive growth, and educational outcomes across Sri Lanka.
Thousands of children across Sri Lanka attend school hungry due to poverty, food insecurity, and rising inflation. Conditions are worse in plantation areas, war-affected zones, and under-resourced rural communities. Malnutrition weakens children and hinders their focus, learning, and growth. Despite government efforts, gaps remain in sustainable school feeding programs, especially in regions where malnutrition is most widespread.
This program provides one daily nutritious meal to children in 1000 schools with high malnutrition rates. Meals include rice, dhal, vegetables, fish, eggs, and fruits, using local, healthy ingredients. Schools, communities, and authorities will manage preparation and delivery. Women's participation will be promoted, boosting local economies. Nutrition awareness sessions will support long-term impact and healthier habits for families.
The School Meal Program will reduce child malnutrition, improve health, and boost education across Sri Lanka. Reliable access to nutritious food will increase attendance, focus, and reduce dropouts. Over time, healthier, educated children will better support their communities and help end poverty. The program also promotes community-led efforts, enhancing food security and resilience at the local level through inclusive, sustainable practices.
