Every Meal Counts: Keeping Children in School.

By Joshua Omondi | Project Leader

Project Overview

we continue to implement the Feed a Child to Stay in School project, an initiative we aim at improving access to education by addressing hunger among vulnerable children from low-income families in our surrounding community.

For many children in our community, attending school on an empty stomach is a daily struggle. Poverty and food insecurity have continued to affect children's concentration, classroom participation, academic performance and regular school attendance.

Through your generosity and continued support , we have been able to provide nutritious meals to 570 learners in our primary and secondary school sections. The programme provides breakfast and lunch on school days, ensuring that children have the energy and motivation needed to participate effectively in their learning activities.

 Project Achievements and Impact

The project has continued to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the children we serve.

Some of the key achievements include:

  • Improved school attendance: Providing meals has encouraged more children to attend school regularly, contributing to a reduction in absenteeism.

  • Improved concentration: Children are now better able to concentrate during lessons and actively participate in classroom activities because they no longer have to endure long school hours without food.

  • Better learner participation: Adequate meals have contributed to improved energy levels, classroom engagement and general well-being.

  • Support for vulnerable households: The programme has provided relief to families struggling to meet their children's basic nutritional needs.

  • Improved school retention: By addressing hunger, we are helping create an environment where children can remain in school and focus on achieving their educational goals.

The feeding programme has become an important part of our commitment to ensuring that poverty does not prevent children from accessing quality education.

 A Story of Transformation

One of the most encouraging experiences from this project is the transformation we have witnessed in a learner named Antony. Before benefiting from the feeding programme, Antony struggled with inadequate nutrition, which affected his energy levels and general participation in school activities. He often lacked the strength and enthusiasm needed to participate fully in his learning.

Through the provision of regular breakfast and lunch at school, Antony has experienced a remarkable improvement. He is now more energetic, active and enthusiastic about attending school. His participation in classroom activities has improved, and he is increasingly able to enjoy his learning experience.

Antony's story represents the difference that a simple but consistent intervention can make in a child's life. It reminds us that sometimes, the first step towards unlocking a child's academic potential is ensuring that they have something to eat.

 Challenges Experienced

Despite the progress made, the project continues to experience several challenges that threaten its sustainability and expansion.

Limited financial resources: The number of children requiring nutritional support continues to grow, while available funding remains insufficient to meet all their needs.

Rising cost of food: Inflation and the increasing cost of essential food commodities have made it more expensive to provide meals consistently.

Growing enrolment: As more vulnerable children seek educational opportunities at Sheepcare Community Centre, the demand for meals continues to increase.

Household food insecurity: We have also observed that some children are concerned about siblings at home who may not have enough food. In some instances, children wish to share the food provided at school with their families.

These challenges reinforce the importance of strengthening the programme to ensure that no child is left hungry while pursuing an education.

 Plans and Priorities Going Forward

We remain committed to strengthening the feeding programme and reaching more vulnerable children.

Our priorities include:

  1. Sustaining the provision of breakfast and lunch to all currently supported learners.

  2. Increasing the nutritional value and diversity of meals by incorporating more nutritious food options.

  3. Exploring opportunities to extend food assistance to vulnerable households, particularly families whose children are beneficiaries of the programme.

  4. Mobilising additional resources and partnerships to accommodate the growing number of learners.

  5. Strengthening community participation and local partnerships to promote the long-term sustainability of the initiative.

We sincerely appreciate you for your contribution towards making this project possible.Your generosity goes beyond providing food. You are helping children attend school consistently, concentrate in class, participate in learning and build a brighter future.Every meal served represents hope, dignity and an opportunity for a child to pursue their dreams without the distraction of hunger.

We remain committed to ensuring that every contribution is used responsibly to improve the lives of vulnerable children in our community.

Although we have made significant progress, the need remains great. Approximately 570 learners depend on this programme for meals during school days, costing us $60 per day, and many more vulnerable children need similar support. Kindly help us reach to your network to continue standing with us. Your continued support will help us sustain the feeding programme, improve the quality of meals and reach even more children.

Kind Regards
