At 10, I left home because there was no food to eat, for that reasons I stayed on the street for 12 years of my early life, no education, no skill. I know what it means for hunger to push a child onto the street. Today, through AKHIN Africa, I work with children facing the same reality. Many are homeless because their families cannot provide basic food. We provide meals alongside shelter, education and rehabilitation. Your support can give a child food, hope and a reason to stay off the street.
Hunger is forcing vulnerable children onto the streets, where survival comes before childhood. Without food, protection or family support, they face exploitation, abuse, child labour, drug use and untreated illness. Many are pushed out of school and lose the opportunity to build a safe future. What begins with hunger can become a lifetime of vulnerability. These children need a place they can call home where they don't need to think of what to eat next, and a pathway back to education.
By providing regular, nutritious meals, we address one of the immediate reasons vulnerable children leave home or remain on the streets: hunger. A reliable meal gives children a safe reason to stay at our centre, where we can also provide shelter, protection, counselling, education and skills training. This creates a pathway from hunger and street survival to safety, learning and a more secure future.
With regular food, children can remain in a safe environment, return to education, recover from trauma, and develop practical skills for work or entrepreneurship. Over time, this can lead to healthier, educated and economically independent young people who can support their families and contribute positively to their communities instead of remaining trapped in poverty and street survival.
