The war in Ukraine is breaking our hearts and it is impossible to imagine what people are going through as their homes and lives are destroyed. The people in northern Uganda do understand and are praying for their Ukrainian brothers and sisters.
In northern Uganda a box of matches was all it took for the rebels, as they moved from village to village, to burn down grass thatched huts whilst killing anyone in their path.
Their war lasted for 20 years and now, after more than 10 years, they are still slowly rebuilding their lives. All the progress they made was wiped out during the Covid pandemic. It was the unintended consequences of the lockdown that did for them. They were left with no food, money or education. Thousands of school girls fell pregnant, having sex in return for food for their families.
Now we are seeing that the war in Ukraine is impacting the whole world, including Uganda. Food prices have gone through the roof - the price of cooking oil has doubled. Fuel is becoming prohibitively expensive. This makes our porridge project even more important as it could be the only hot food the children eat in a day.
All this I shall see for myself. Finally, after nearly two and a half years, I am off to Uganda next week.
In brighter news, we are having a great time tracking Edith Maersk. Edith who (I hear you say)? Edith Maersk is a container ship travelling slowly from London to Mombasa. From there one of the containers on board will be taken to Kampala. This container is very special as it is full of items that have been donated to our projects in northern Uganda. Included in this precious consignment are 40 boxes of uniforms and sports kit, donated by a school in Guildford. We will be able to kit out hundreds of children in smart blazers, shirts and jumpers! You can follow Edith' progress here, but beware as it is rather addictive!
In my next report I will be able to update you on what I have seen with my own eyes, rather than relying on second hand information. I can't wait to be back in Uganda.
I will do my best to share as much of our travels as possible and you can follow me on Twitter and Facebook .
Thank you, as always, for your kind and generous support.
With best wishes
Alison
