Summary

This project will help feed 1,800 orphaned and vulnerable children every day. Malnutrition is an inherent problem throughout rural Kenya, which is further complicated by many political, social and economic factors. One nutritious meal a day will save a child's life. In as little as four months, a malnourished child can transform into a healthy child. A healthy, well fed child can then attend school and gain knowledge and skills for a productive and hopeful future.

Challenge

Malnutrition is an inherent problem throughout much of Africa. A typical diet in Makindu consists of various forms of maize and beans. Rarely do children get milk, eggs, or other forms of protein; vegetables and fruit generally do not grow easily there; and goats and cows produce little milk, as they are also starving. 1,800 orphaned and vulnerable children have access to nutritious, well-rounded meals at Makindu Children's Centre.

Solution

We will provide nutritious, well-rounded meals to the children at Makindu Children's Centre. In as little as four months, a malnourished child eating one nutritious meal a day will transform into a healthy, happier child with hope for the future.

Long-Term Impact

Providing nutritious meals to the children will shield them from malnutrition and enable them to attend school and learn valuable skills for a productive future. The community will benefit by growing an educated, healthy and hopefully employed population that will help grow Kenya's struggling economy. Most importantly, the 1,800 children and the community of Makindu will have greater HOPE and improved health for the future.
