Back to school: Post COVID 19 induced lockdown

Greetings to you all.

We hope to find you well and safe in these trying times of the spread of the COVID-19. Education sectors have not been spared from the negative impacts of the global pandemic. We have learnt together with our beneficiaries, to adapt to the situation so that we make sure that education does not stop even amidst prolonged school closures and lockdowns.

In our last report in February 2021, we indicated that nine of our beneficiaries had received their final Ordinary level results and had done fairly well. The total number of beneficiaries currently in schools this year is four, two are in Advanced level and 1 is in grade 4. The Advanced level learners will be seating for their final examinations this November. This year we also have 1 beneficiary who is at tertiary level and is in her first year at a Belvedere Teachers College in the capital city.

We are happy that all our beneficiaries are back in school since the opening of schools in September. Schools opened late this year that is in February and closed abruptly in June and have remained closed to September. During the lockdown period, FAWEZI continued to use the WhatsApp platform to share reading materials and updates on the school calendar with the beneficiaries. As of now the Zimbabwean schools are open and the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (MoPSE) has indicated that the 2021 final examinations will be written before the year ends.

Learners are alternating in school attendance as a measure to limit numbers and maintain social distancing when in class. This means that our beneficiaries are attending class about twice or thrice in a week as the schools they go to have large enrolments. During the days when they are home our beneficiaries make use of the MoPSE radio lessons and other online learning sessions. We have been encouraging them to read widely on their own and also support each other through WhatsApp discussions.

FAWEZI continues to reach out to its beneficiaries whenever they need support and making sure they are keeping afloat with their school work through these difficult times.  As an organisation our desire is that these learners get access to alternative learning platforms such as radio lessons and online lessons. We implore you friends of FAWEZ, to continue to extend your support financially so that in addition to payment of fees and purchase of uniforms and stationery we can purchase solar powered radios, mobile phones and airtime for our beneficiaries.

The organisation and beneficiaries remain grateful for your support. We are confident that you will keep on supporting this good cause. As always we thank you for helping us make a positive impact on the lives of our disadvantaged girls.

From all of us here at FAWEZI -Thank you.
